Intern - Engineering

The City of Tualatin is seeking an Engineering Intern for Summer 2025. The scope of the internship includes, but is not limited to, construction observations, traffic and pedestrian counts/observations, plan and permit review, water quality facility inspection, cataloging ADA improvements made, and coordination of city capital projects and private development. The majority of internship duties will be conducted in person, at the Tualatin City Services building, with occasional fieldwork. Remote work opportunities will be limited.

The internship will be up to 40 hours a week for an anticipated duration of 16 weeks. This internship will require use of a City vehicle and therefore, a valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required. 

This internship is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a career in Civil Engineering.  While no prior experience is necessary, the City is ideally looking for students who have completed at least two years of college—generally juniors, seniors, or graduate students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Designs and performs in-depth research. 

Compiles data, synthesizes information, creates matrices, charts and graphics, creates and presents reports and presentations. Makes recommendations.

Performs interviews of various community members and stakeholders.

 

Presents findings to City Council, Community Groups, or the public.

 

Plans, develops and directs City-wide programs or events. Participates in organizing the necessary materials, tools, and supplies for varying program needs. Organizes and procures tools, material and supplies needed for defined programs.

 

Provides event/program leadership.

 

Prepares program submittals, evaluations, and reports. Keeps records, requisitions equipment, materials and supplies.

 

In collaboration with departmental staff, develops a schedule or time line within the program that addresses city and/or department objectives. 

 

Develops community interest and participation in events/programs. Publicizes activities and programs.

 

Ensures appropriate security and safety of recreational facility, public properties, activities, programs and participants.

 

Recognizes unsafe conditions and reports to appropriate City staff.

 

Performs general clerical and staff functions, including but not limited to: preparing reports and records data. May also perform registration, scheduling, maintaining records, answering phones and inquiries, and providing information to the public.

Education and/or Experience: Three years of college education in a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and education which would enable the person to perform the essential functions of the position.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, volunteers or partners of organization.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills: Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with associates, volunteers, participants, and the general public. Ability to maintain records and make reports. Ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Additional Information:

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid state driver's license and acceptable driving record.
