ABOUT COALITION FOR HISPANIC FAMILY SERVICES (CHFS):
CHFS is a community-based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 35 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships, the provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner. ABOUT THE ARTS & LITERACY PROGRAM:
The Arts & Literacy Program is an innovative afterschool and summer program addressing Brooklyn and Queens youth’s needs. We educate and inspire youth ages 5 – 14 in creative writing, drawing, painting, drama, photography, video, music, yoga, creative movement/dance, team sports, and apprenticeships for high school students. The child’s family is also engaged through family literacy workshops, parent support, and referrals to comprehensive services.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Summer Group Leader position is central to the delivery of quality arts and literacy education services. Group Leaders are key to ensuring that the work being done with the students is of the highest quality. Whether building dynamic academic focused lessons, role modeling social emotional skills, supporting student-led project-based activities, or collaborating as part of a program team, group leaders make a difference in the lives of the children that we serve.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead social-emotional learning and academic enrichment activities.
- Supervise the completion of student’s homework.
- Manage student behavior charts.
- Create and Implement post homework activities.
- Implement educational plans for students in need.
- Maintain accurate attendance for assigned students.
- Communicate with parents regarding student’s progress in the program.
- Make referrals to Art Therapist, as needed.
- Supervise interns/assistants placed within the classroom.
- Participate in events to recruit and retain program participants.
- Participate in agencywide events and all mandatory training as assigned.
- Any other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrolled in college, preferably in education or related field.
- 2 years’ experience in youth development required.
- Ability to plan educational activities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Knowledge of positive discipline methods.
- Knowledge of childhood development.
- Ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas to participants.
- Experience working with diverse youth populations.
- Occasional flexible schedule may be required - some weekends and evenings.
- Bilingual-Spanish/Mandarin/French is preferred.
