Chemical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved the fact that I felt like a member of a team with something valuable to contribute. My coworkers and managers encouraged me to ask questions if I needed help, I never felt embarrassed or unintelligent if I got stuck on a project. Additionally, there are so many components that go into an automotive seat, so I could always find something to work on or learn about and I never got bored. My employers are extremely flexible and understanding of life outside of work, this made me feel cared for and motivated as a result.

Advice

This is a great place to apply to be a summer intern, the friends I have made here are amazing and the progress I have made here has been exceptional. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and always ask questions, it's one of the most important parts of the job!

Tax Analyst Intern

What I liked

Before beginning my internship with Adient as a Tax Analyst, I Interned for Baird as an Internal Audit Intern for 13 months. Having interned for Adient for almost 10 months now, I am sure that tax is the route I want to go with my accounting degree. During my internship as a tax analyst with Adient, I significantly improved my skills with Microsoft Excel and the preparation of tax returns for corporations, LLCs, and partnerships. Although I received an internship with Adient through my personal network, it was because of the people I met and built relationships with while on campus at UW Milwaukee.

What I wish was different

The one challenge I have experienced with employers (as an intern) is that the way they provide feedback. The one aspect of my internships that I wish would have been different is that I wish that my employers would have been more direct and deliberate in providing feedback because when accounting majors graduate and work as full-time employees, we will be held to a much higher standard and what would better prepare us to meet that higher standard than by holding us to it as interns. I feel like that would prepare us to hit the ground running and make for a better transition into the workplace post-graduation. My most recent manager was great to work for and I knew he didn't have much free-time; however, I took the initiative and asked him if we could meet for 30 minutes or so every three weeks to discuss my progress and what I could improve on. I also used this time to ask questions about the company and to gain a better understanding of the organizational structure in regards to the tax department.

Advice

I think that many interns are afraid of looking unintelligent or "stupid" by their employers and while they isn't true of every intern, I have heard it a lot. My one piece of advice for students looking to begin their first, or third, internship is to not be afraid to ask questions to the people they work with. They understand that you're an intern and that you're learning to apply the knowledge from school to the dynamic environment of the real world. There's no better place to learn from your mistakes than during an internship so ask questions, learn from your mistakes, and show your employers that you are able to grasp deeper concepts by asking thoughtful and meaningful questions.
