What I liked

Company culture, intent activities & friendly staff.

Advice

Remember to take all the opportunities you can, without limiting yourself based on you own box.

Financial Lines Underwriting Intern

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The internship started out with a 3-day all-expense-paid trip to their New York headquarters where we had the chance to network with the other hundred and fifty interns. Also, my team in Chicago was incredibly supportive and helpful, and they gave me meaningful work throughout most of the internship. They also held sessions to teach me about the industry.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have a capstone project at the end of the summer.

Advice

Make the most of the networking sessions. In your free time, email everyone who seems interesting. Everyone is always willing to talk to you. Also, be honest and genuine.

Product Management Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The diverse culture was very appealing. The people were so helpful, there was access to a ton of valuable resources to help learn about the company and the insurance industry, exposure to many executives, easy to learn about other departments you might be interested in. Lots of fun activities to keep you away from the laptop and give you a break: like the 5-week-long bingo activity, Friday socials, talent shows, volunteer events like tutoring/planting trees, and virtual DIY cooking with the team. You will do meaningful project work alone and in groups, and get a chance to present findings to your line of business so that the decisions made benefit the company. I got paid with one intern every week to get to know them. I had a super supportive manager, buddy, and champion.

What I wish was different

I wish more time was dedicated to project work with our managers. I also I missed the human interaction aspect of it, which was solely due to covid.

Advice

Whether it's virtual or in-person, be yourself. Exercise curiosity, take advantage of the resources, learn and ask quality questions. Your managers want you to succeed so engage them and give them feedback. It's a two-way street. Network with other interns and full-time employees and build those connections. Explore other lines of business that might interest you.

Finance Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals and learned an immense amount from them. Through this was a formal internship program, I can honestly say I was not treated like an intern but rather a member of team. I was given a significant amount of responsibility and was directly involved with clients as well as higher ups in the company.

What I wish was different

I don't have any complaints about my internship experience at AIG. The program was well led, executed, and funded.

Advice

Network Network. Network! Take every opportunity to build relationship with both people internal to your company and clients. Those relationships will be key in receiving a return offer. They already know you are capable (after all they hired you in the first place!) a huge chunk of what they are looking for is wether or not you are someone they can count on to produce deliverables and someone that they enjoy working alongside. If you can do those things and continue to maintain those relationships you're golden.

Cyber Security Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • Reston, VA

What I liked

I liked learning about how a Fortune 100 company handles cyber security on a day-to-day basis. I was on the Threat Intelligence team, so I got to see how outside intelligence was analyzed in relation to AIG. (Also, it was close to DC and I had a blast wandering around on the weekends!)

What I wish was different

I wish there was more company culture, but I think that had a lot to do with how new the office was. I wouldn't change anything about the position I had or the work I was assigned.

Advice

Bring a notepad and pen to every meeting, whether you're going to an actual meeting or just shadowing or speaking to another employee.

Technology Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The orientation, senior speaker series and working at a large company.

What I wish was different

Got back to me sooner about full time employment. HR had told us during orientation and the last week of the Internship that we would find out about future employment by September.

Advice

Insurance is much more than statistics and actuarial expertise. Industry specific knowledge is extremely helpful for commercial insurance products. In addition there are plenty of opportunities in IT and Software Development.
