I loved the company values and benifits. Everyone was very plesent to work with.
What I wish was different
I do not like COBOL, so maybe another language to study would've been nice.
Advice

June - August 2020 • Lansing, MI
What I liked
The team I worked with was very welcoming and kind. Even though I was only there for a few weeks and the internship was remote, they made sure to make me feel included. I also like how involved the internship program was and how Auto-Owners made sure to connect interns with others. About once a week I met with someone knew within the company - whether that be another intern not in I.T. or a manager. I also liked how they invited interns to meetings to learn more about Auto-Owners and to learn more about working in a professional environment.
What I wish was different
I wish it would have been possible for the internship to be in-person, although I understand why that was not possible.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions! Your mentor was new once too and they are there to help you be your best.

What I liked
My team was very supportive and helpful. Even though it was a virtual internship, my coworkers always made a point to touch base with me and see how I was doing.
What I wish was different
I wish the internship was in person, but COVID-19 has been a prevalent issue, so I understand why it had to be virtual.
Advice
Always show the initiative to do your work. Be a self-starter and don't wait for people to tell you what you should be working on. This will make you stand out to any employer.

Software Developer Intern
May 2018 - August 2019 • Lansing, MI
What I liked
Auto-Owners Insurance is a phenomenal company to work for! Their full-time offer's salary at first seemed low but when you begin to add up the benefits and bonuses it makes the offer quite competitive! I sincerely look forward to starting there full-time in June of 2020!
What I wish was different
My first year of my internship I wish I had subleased a place in Lansing. Driving an hour each way every day from Mt Pleasant was WAY too much driving!
Advice
No matter how confident you are in your skills, just do the internship! The training at AO is the best, bar none! I learned more in two months there than I learned in my four years of Computer Science classes!

Insurance Underwriting Intern
May - August 2019 • Draper, UT
What I liked
The culture of the company is great. All the managers have an open-door policy which made asking questions a lot easier. Co-workers were all super friendly and helpful. The training program that they put you through is helpful and gets you up to speed quickly. You actually work and get hands-on experience. I learned a ton about auto insurance that has helped me in my personal life and finances.
What I wish was different
The computer program that they use to underwrite insurance policies is an old DOS system from the '80s. It's time for a system upgrade.
Advice
Don't be afraid to explore the insurance industry. I know that the insurance industry gets a bad rap. Put aside all generalizations of what you think the industry is like and really get to know the ins and outs of insurance. Learning about the industry will help you so much in your personal life when trying to find insurance, and understand all the jargon.

Auto Claims Adjuster Intern
May - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN
What I liked
I handled everyday claims and helped customers with their troubles. It was the true “real life” experience I was wanting in an internship.
What I wish was different
I specifically handled single party auto claims. I was able to shadow some property reps, but I wish I could have seen more home/business inspections.
Advice
When on the phone with a customer and they are yelling at you. The majority of the time they will be frustrated with something that has nothing to do with you. You just have to laugh about it and not take to heart. Just try and help the customer as best as possible.

Personal Lines Underwriting
June 2019 • Columbia, SC
What I liked
From the very beginning I was told this was not going to a typical internship where’d I be filing paper, making coffee runs, shredding paper, ect... The very first day I began training and quickly began doing normal everyday tasks that the full time employees did too. It was a great way for me to learn more about underwriting while getting first hand experience.

IT intern
May - August 2017 • Lansing, MI
What I liked
The company was great! I was not a computer science major and had very limited programming experience, but they trained me in the program I would be using. They gave me a mentor who helped me along the way if I didn't understand anything. They were great about helping me learn the program, answer any questions I had, and even meet with me to discuss my progress.
What I wish was different
Nothing, it was a great internship.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Everyone there has been where you are, and they know what it's like to learn a new program, so don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something.
