Assistant Buyer Intern

June - August 2017 • Burlington, NJ

What I liked

I liked the fact that you have a "buddy" that you get to personally shadow. My buddy was incredibly helpful in terms of my learning experience of the position. I didn't really know what exactly an assistant buyer did but they really walk you through the role. You also get to shadow different positions within the department to explore other interests. They really treat you like you are part of the team. Additionally, you are placed within another group of interns to complete a group project at the end of the summer. My group members were interns with different disciplines other than buying so it was really beneficial to our project.

What I wish was different

I would suggest maybe more shadowing opportunities in a few different areas so you can attempt to fully understand the buying scope For example, I was placed in beauty but I got to shadow apparel. However, there are other departments like home, seasonal that interns should be introduced to to understand the full scope of buying.

Advice

Make as many connections as you can! It is so important to network so that if you hopefully get hired back, you have a network of advisers.

Retail Associate

July - August 2019 • Miami Gardens, FL

What I liked

I liked that my fellow coworkers were very friendly and willing to help me learn every aspect of the job. That equipped me with enough skills to work almost independently, instead of having to be micromanaged every time I changed tasks.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to interact with people more. Being a sales floor rep instead of a cashier at Burlington meant that I rarely talked to people (customer or co-worker) throughout my shift. The lack of human interaction can be a bit isolating if it’s something you normally thrive on.

Advice

One piece of advice I’d share about the experience is that working in retail requires a lot of patience and attention to detail, so be prepared to spend multiple hours in a row doing the same menial tasks almost everyday. Working in retail will likely not be enjoyable for people who like to constantly try new things at work and thrive in ever-changing environments.

Buying Intern

June - August 2018 • Burlington, NJ

What I liked

I learned a lot about the buying side of retail. Each week we were able to go to New York and sit in on vendor meetings, and view the products that were going into stores. Through going to vendor meetings, you were able to learn a lot about negotiating and how to interact with different kinds of personalities.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Know that you always have a place at table, and everyone their truly wants to know your opinion about things.
