Volunteer Engagement Intern

May - September 2021 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I really appreciated that my supervisor wanted me to gain skills in areas I found most pertinent (Human Resources, Project Management, etc.). She would routinely schedule meetings to discuss what I was learning and what I may want to work on more.

What I wish was different

Pay was a big reason why more people did not apply to otherwise very beneficial internships. It was also a barrier to those who could not afford to take an unpaid internship over a paid job (even if it was outside of their field of study). My supervisor understood this issue for me, so I was able to schedule my hours to accommodate my other job so that I could still pay my bills. However, even a stipend would have gone a long way.

Advice

Come in with an idea of what you want to get out of it. I know that it is a cliche, but "you get what you put into it" which in reality is a very great thing!
