Dollar General

Retail Salesperson

June - September 2019 • Vicksburg, MS

What I liked

I enjoyed the weekly pay. For something that pays $7.25 an hour, weekly pay is much more convenient than monthly or bi-weekly.

What I wish was different

I wish there was better management.

Advice

Don’t go into it with a negative mindset. Even if you don’t like the management, you don’t have to deal with them much if you choose not to.

Sales Associate

July 2019 - September 2020 • Verbena, AL

What I liked

I loved my coworkers and customers. It was hard work and made for a busy day. I enjoyed gaining real world experience while also going to school. I took 4 classes at my university while working during the summer and I was so glad to work for someone who would work around my school schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish that we would have had more staff. Some days it was extremely hard to get work done because so many people swamped us at the beginning of the pandemic. I feel they also could have done a better job at protecting employees from COVID-19.

Advice

Always be respectful to everyone, you never know who you may meet (even in Dollar General)!

Cashier

July - August 2020 • Howland, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed interaction with my coworkers greatly, and it was always a good feeling to help our customers. I was happy to get a job at a difficult time where internships were scarce and the pandemic left me without income.

What I wish was different

The pay was definitely low, but was to be expected for the role. I knew what I was getting myself into, though I do believe it is not a liveable wage. Also, after serving out my last day after my two weeks notice, I have sensed a great deal of resentment and distaste from management after visiting as a customer.

Advice

Always stay humble, and give your all regardless of your position. I have worked high end jobs for much better reward, but the personal rewards i felt at DG were great. I always enjoyed the times I had with my coworkers and customers.

Store Manager

April - August 2020 • Kannapolis, NC

What I liked

It was good real life management experience. I had 6-8 people working for me, all were older than me, and I ran entire grocery store for about 2 months. I hired new people and conducted interviews with them, I also had to fire someone for non-compliance with company policy. Overall I learned the values of education and not settling for a position that you can get easily. The job was not easy and I worked 40+ hours a week every week. However it added to my strong personal work drive and I was able to be proud of the work I did.

What I wish was different

There are corporate changes that need to be made overall within the organization itself. Pressure of success relies on employees who are almost entirely indifferent to the brand reputation so motivation and pride in work is a hard thing to invoke in the employees. The manager I answered to utilized a threatening and fear-inducing management style that was not conducive to creating a stable work environment for managers.

Advice

I harken back to my first point where I say not to be afraid of taking positions of leadership within a job. I worked for them for less than 6 months and with no prior management experience, outside of a classroom setting, I was managing 6-8 full time employees and doing it well.

Advice

Have some fun with it. Work hard, but don’t forget to smile and interact with customers as well!

Merchandising intern

June - July 2021 • Goodlettsville, TN

What I liked

I was able to experience what working remotely is like. I enjoyed the team and culture at Dollar General. They emphasize heavily on “serving the under-served” and that gave me great pride in the work I was completing.

What I wish was different

I would’ve liked to have more in person exposure but Covid-19 played a big role in that.

Advice

I would recommend that you give a position that maybe you wouldn’t think is in your wheelhouse a shot. There an abundance of opportunities with all different job responsibilities that may fit your style and some of them you may not even realize exist. I would also push everyone to always ask questions, don’t ever feel like you’re a burden.
