What I liked

I love being able to interact with the different patients that come through. I mostly dealt with assisting patients in finding where their appointments were located and even escorting them when necessary.

What I wish was different

There's nothing I would wish to be different. The staff was nice and the patients are nice to talk to

Within the guest services department, it is very important to learn where each department is located and to build a relationship with the people you're working with

What I liked

Management on my floor is extremely supportive and encouraging to new grads. Retention is not an issue on my unit, and all of my coworkers treat each other like family.

What I wish was different

Advice

This isn’t a job that I expected or even thought that I wanted, but when I interviewed, I felt that the unit I now work on had a supportive work environment and a great culture. Remember that during your interviews you are interviewing your possible employers also.

What I liked

I loved the independence Emory gave me as I worked on my project. Once my preceptors were confident I had an understanding of what needed to be done, they gave me full autonomy over my work, and I was able to independently schedule meetings, make site visits, communicate with administration, and collaborate with others. The physicians and administrators were friendly and always willing to help.

What I wish was different

From my understanding, the healthcare industry is very stop-and-go in administrative workload. Often, since I was scheduling meetings and project updates around doctors' schedules, there would be periods of very intense work and some lulls in workload.

Advice

Reach out to people, even if you don't directly work with them. They'll always be willing to help you out and maybe even offer new ideas and projects for you to work on along the way!
