Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2024 • Olathe, KS

What I liked

Company culture, very much 'work at your own pace'. It was nice working at a company where the largest job title was Software Engineer as they know how to cater to you and make your job as easy as possible

What I wish was different

More options for remote or hybrid work

Advice

Ask a ton of questions and just be ready to dive in and learn as much as possible.

What I liked

The internship was structured very well. Managers give you challenging projects that will actually make an impact on the company and help you learn. There is a welcoming company work environment with lots of social activities outside of work.

What I wish was different

More collaboration between interns at different office locations (like in different states).

May - August 2022 • Olathe, KS

What I liked

Great experience learning the development stack and tools used at a major company as well as the complete software development life cycle. Great people to work with and learn from.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Like school or anything really, what you put in determines what you get out. I found my internship to be rather self paced so it’s good to have some goals in mind of what you want to learn and accomplish over the summer.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Olathe, KS

What I liked

The culture at Garmin is incredible. Everyone is very nice and very helpful. There was no expectation that any intern enters the summer able to perform their job. The onboarding process is very helpful and the 1:1 mentorship is invaluable. I was never treated as an intern, either through interactions with others or through the work I was assigned. All interns are treated as full-time employees, with the added benefit of a mentor who sits only a few feet away and is always happy to help.

What I wish was different

I wish they would have given me more time to accept my return offer. That is why I had to decline it.

Advice

Come ready to learn! Garmin is an incredible company and I am so proud to have worked for them. Their internship program is one of the top programs in the country for software engineering.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Olathe, KS

What I liked

I really liked the employee culture that exists Garmin. Everyone was very kind and helpful whenever I need help or had a question. The company has several events to engage employees and had a lot of intern events to help the interns get to know one another very well. They encouraged their employees to stay fit and practice a healthy work/life balance. As an intern, you were given real project that were either used internally or were a part of a product that Garmin produces for its consumers. Their intern mentoring program was also very beneficial as each intern was assigned a mentor who was in charge of delegating tasks and assisting the intern. I felt very close to my team.

What I wish was different

There is honestly not a lot I that I would change. I wish I would have spent more time there, which is why I’m going back as a full time software engineer.

Advice

If you love working with embedded device, Garmin is the place for you. They have a team for everything related to embedded devices, from low-level chip initialization to operating system and UI design. You will be exposed to everything related to embedded devices.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Olathe, KS

What I liked

The experience was very personal. They made sure I had everything I needed and took care of us very well. The recruiters and my team were all very friendly and helpful. They never talked down to me and always made me feel valued as a member of Garmin. Overall, I learned a great deal in the technical aspect and the social aspect of Garmin and the professional field in general.

What I wish was different

The company they went through to provide housing wasn't very organized, but they still provided me free housing over the summer, so I can't complain. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else I would change.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's always good to try to figure out something for yourself first, but there is a line between wasting time trying to figure out something complex yourself rather than just asking a coworker for help on a problem they are already familiar with.

Advice

When you start a new task, it's very important to understand what this task means and what results should be. Work hard and prove your value at work.

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

Got hands-on experience developing a new smartwatch. Was treated as part of the engineering team. Lots of social events coordinated by other interns, housing paid for, and KC is a great city. PTO, paid holidays, all sorts of additional benefits.

What I wish was different

Intern Expo presentations near the end of the summer felt a little rushed. Was still a great experience sharing what I worked on with the entire company.

Advice

Take advantage of all the amazing benefits and learn as much as you can from your mentor.

What I liked

The team culture is really great. It is a small, tightly-knit office and everyone is friendly with each other! We have a lot of fun. And the work is so interesting.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had asked more questions!

Advice

Internships should provide value to both the company and the student. My mentor and team lead at Garmin worked hard to make sure that there would be value for me. Make sure you find a company that will value you enough to do the same!
