I would definitely network as much as you can during the internship - NNS is tightly knit, and if you pursue it enough, it will be an incredible experience.

What I liked
At Newport News Shipbuilding, I always felt so supported in everything I was doing. Whether that was through the intern team, or my own department, there was always someone willing to help me, show me around, ask if I needed anything, and much more. The Shipyard itself is also a really cool place! NNS created many opportunities for us to explore all the Shipyard had to offer. Going up on the big cranes, exploring the foundry, and of course, getting to travel around the air craft carriers, were just a few highlights I enjoyed.

Advice
What you put into the experience is exactly what you will get out of it. Leadership will ensure that if there are things you want to do, they will help make it happen. However, you have to be an advocate for yourself in this sense, meaning you will have to ask and be curious often.

What I liked
The culture of the company was great, and really supported the development of the first year interns.
What I wish was different
Originally going in I was assigned to a department, but later learned I would be relocated to a non related project. My project was good, but it was not what the internship was promised to me.
Advice
Network within the company.

Engineering Intern
May - August 2018 • Newport News, VA
What I liked
I loved working on Aircraft carriers and submarines almost everyday. There was rarely a day that I worked at my desk the whole day.
What I wish was different
I wish the parking was better. I had a small window of opportunity to find parking and if I missed it then parking became almost impossible.
Advice
Work in the yard, the parking is not great, but you will learn a lot more actually being in the yard than in one of the outside buildings. Many interns were outside of the yard and they felt isolated, but content. I was one of those interns the year before and all I wanted to do was travel into the yard.

IT Intern
May - August 2018 • Newport News, VA
What I liked
I liked that my work allowed me to apply what I had learned in the classroom. I was also able to take my software development to a new level while truly implementing security measures not often practiced within the classroom setting.
What I wish was different
I was a co-op previously and was very unhappy with my placement. While the shipyard is a great place to work, most interns are unhappy with their original assignment unless their application to the shipyard is very specific. As a computer science major, my skills were versatile to the needs of the shipyard which was great for the shipyard, but not so much for me until my second rotation.
Advice
Be vocal about your experience. If you are seeing something that doesn't make sense or are unhappy with your work, speak your thoughts. It benefits no one if you do not communicate your grievances.

May - July 2018 • Newport News, VA
What I liked
I enjoyed learning about the company as a whole and how the business works. I also enjoyed working with and becoming more familiar with Microsoft products. Additionally, I was able to improve my soft skills, as I constantly worked with a team and between teams.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had a large project to consistently work on supplementing the smaller projects I worked on.
Advice
Take matters into your own hands when it comes to learning about the shipbuilding industry and how the company operates, as it is very complex and there are many levels to it.
