Equity Sales & Trading Summer Analyst

What I liked

I enjoyed the camaraderie at the workplace and how open many people were to helping interns and teaching us about their roles. It was a very fast-paced and dynamic environment, yet everyone had planned tasks/projects for us to work on that were actually important to the firm. We also had multiple opportunities to meet not only the CEO but many members of management who broke down the firm's history and vision and were open to our often probing questions. It was a great summer working experience!

What I wish was different

I think there was definitely an effort to make our intern group highly diverse, but more representation on the actual desks would have been great!

Advice

This is the kind of internship experience that will require you to be fully present every single day even in the early hours of the morning. It may get intense at times and you may feel stretched thin to complete everything while building and maintaining connections with people at the firm. That's how the internship is designed, but take care that you don't forget to prioritize face time with your team and other interns, and really get to know the people you will be working with. Also, everyone on the floor and in your intern program is highly competent and intelligent, and as a junior that may feel overwhelming but always show up confident and don't be afraid to ask questions (the right way and at the right time). Always be open to learning, make mistakes and learn from them quickly, and try your best to be on top of market news.

Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the fast-paced environment of investment banking; while the hours were often long, each day was totally different from the one prior, and I feel that I gained invaluable experience from my summer internship. The work that I was doing was interesting, relevant, and was important, and I enjoyed the responsibility that came with it. Jefferies also has a generalist rotating internship program, so I was able to work in a number of different groups and see a lot of different companies. I also liked being in New York City with a lot of my friends.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to see a little bit of the other services Jefferies offered. While I knew that I was signing up for an investment banking program, I think the chance to see other programs like sales and trading or asset management would be interesting.

Advice

Understand what you're getting into. Investment banking is an interesting and exciting field, but it involves a lot of work and there can be some stressful times. Regardless, having a great attitude and trying to enjoy the work makes everything a lot easier and rewarding.

What I liked

I liked the relatively flat structures of the team. I felt very comfortable walking into my associate or even MDs office at any time to ask for advice on a project

What I wish was different

I wish that my return offer would allow me to work for the group that I interned for.

Advice

Get to know your team very well. You should feel very comfortable talking to your team about any concerns you have without feeling they are judging you

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

What I liked

The people I worked with were incredible, ranging from fellow interns all the way up to the CEO of the firm. The experience was very fun despite long hours, and the firm did a fantastic job of mentoring and developing the interns, through teaching and delegating real responsibility.

What I wish was different

I was at times overstaffed on many different deals across many different groups, so the hours got pretty tough, but it ultimately was beneficial in terms of learning experience and pushing myself as an employee.

Advice

For any future employee of Jefferies, I would advise you to go out and meet as many people as you can as early and often as possible,.

Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

It was great to work on both live deals and pitches across a variety of technology products. Examples of deals I worked on were sell side M&A, IPO's and follow on offerings. The best part about one deal I worked on, which was a follow on offering for a cyber security software company, was that I was able to work on the deal from the very beggining to it's close.

What I wish was different

Not much. Obviously the hours were brutal and having more free time this summer would have been nice, but I knew what I was getting myself into and learned to enjoy the grind of working 80-100 hours weeks every week for 10 weeks.

Advice

The best thing to do as a summer analyst is do your best to get on every deal possible without compromising the quality of your work. Always ask the full time analysts/associates if they need help on a project even if you are not officially "staffed" on it. You are working for a limited amount of time with a light at the end of the tunnel so there is no excuse to not push yourself and work on as many deals as possible. Also, it is wise to keep a "mistake book". All it needs to be is a small note book that you keep on your desk that whenever you make a stupid mistake you write it down and what you should have done instead. This will help to minimize repeated mistakes which is one of the biggest things the full time employers are looking for you to avoid.
