What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to work with people of different backgrounds from many parts of the country in many fields. It also gave me great experience with teaching young and foreign children.

What I wish was different

I wish the site management had been more professional and put together. Many of the assignments were last minute with minimal information and terrible leadership.

Advice

I would recommend that you definitely give it a chance as it is a great resume experience. I would also advise you to create a community with your fellow co-workers as they will be great to network with and learn from.

Make sure you fill out your direct deposit forms before you start the assignment or you will go all summer without a paycheck.

What I liked

I liked the mentorship from graduate students and PIs as well as the opportunity to do research full-time. I also enjoyed the lab social events.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure and oversight. Specifically, I wish there were more frequent lab meetings to present and update on everyone's work.

Advice

Take charge of your own experience and ask for what you feel is lacking from it.

Medical Research Intern

What I liked

Having the ability to learn and perform research with many providers that are prominent in the medical field. I also had the opportunity to learn more about diversity in medicine by participating with/studying multiple ethnic populations with developmental disorders, spinal cord injuries, and the Urban Native American population in Baltimore. I met with many political figures in Maryland Government and Medical Department Heads of Johns Hopkins Medicine to include the President of Johns Hopkins Health System/Executive Vice-President of Johns Hopkins Medicine. I developed research that I had the opportunity to present at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more funding that I could have spent a full week at the CDC to present more of my research. I wish that there was more information and and funding for projects like this so that more people could have the experience that I had. I wish that UIW was a part of this program, so that it could be a satellite site during the summer for this program.

Advice

This was one of the best experiences that I have had in a long time that was more fun than work. It was an experience that was afforded to me that was not presented in the beginning to be as great as it was. Experience makes us better people to share those experiences with others, not people that are better than others. It was reiterated several times during this experience that we all bleed the same and are human beings that deserve equity and not just equality.

Advice

This internship gave me a chance to live and work in another city. I got to collaborate with other disciplines to solve health public health issues, nothing like I could have ever imagined. My advice is: Don't limit yourself, when you see an opportunity you want, just go for it, no matter how grand it may seem. You have done the work and deserve a fair chance at the reward.

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to learn a new skill on the job. I came into the internship not knowing anything about Tableau software and now the team calls me their "resident expert"

What I wish was different

I wish I had come in with some knowledge of what I would be doing on the job. I also wish I could have been given more direction in the learning of Tableau.

Advice

Even if you don't know how to do certain aspects of the job, if you are confident and willing to put in time and effort to learn you will be a valuable asset to any team.

I got to be a part of cutting edge research on the front lines of the COVID19 pandemic. I also learned how to develop clinical studies with an emphasis on health equity and ethics.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have participated in person, however due to the pandemic, my experience was virtual.

Advice

Make the most out of every opportunity! Even if the experience isn't what you envisioned, you can still have valuable interactions and takeaways.

I liked the chance to do research within my major of cognitive science. It was wonderful to be able to do the research remotely too!

What I wish was different

Maybe more consistent research work from week to week.

Advice

Don't be afraid to just email professors if you're interested in their research! You don't necessarily need to have prior experience -- they often just want to see someone who is curious and really eager to learn. There's a lot of learning on the go too!

I wish I had been able to understand more about the project and why we were doing the research, but I didn't have the level of understanding about immunology to do so.
