Talent Development Intern

What I liked

I liked how, because this was my fourth internship with Kiewit, I was in charge of a lot more than when I first began. Kiewit does a great job of putting responsibilities in the hands of interns but this year was extra special. This was the first year that Kiewit had a virtual work experience for interns. Because of Covid, internships were almost 100% virtual so I had the opportunity of creating and facilitating this online experience with my amazing boss! I had a lot of freedom over my schedule, of the tasks that I took on and in the end we had a really creative and solid final project that I am still really proud of!

What I wish was different

Honestly not much! Because of the circumstances of Covid, I could not have asked for anything better. I was super thankful to have still had an internship during these hard times.

Advice

I would always recommend to take all opportunities presented to you. At Kiewit you are always offered opportunities whether that is to give a presentation, lead a meeting or go on a business trip. Even if you might be nervous, take these opportunities! I have gotten to travel the country, meet executive level employees, present to hundreds of employees and so much more just because I said "yes!"

Mechanical Design

What I liked

It's not your everyday internship such as your cliché getting coffee or making copies. I was doing the same work as a full-time employee and building my knowledge and abilities much like everyone else in my department. I loved all the networking and learning what mechanical design involves outside of the classroom.

What I wish was different

Even though this is something out of their control, working online and from home was difficult especially when I had been in the office the summer prior. I had missed the office culture and the ability to meet new people in person.

Advice

Get to know everyone you possibly can, ask questions (but check resources first), and be flexible on the horizontal ladder of opportunities you may encounter. There are many different opportunities that you can be exposed to at Kiewit. My summer internships of 2019 and 2020 are one for the books.

Business Specialist Intern

What I liked

Lots of hands-on experiences and opportunities to work on-site and in the office. Always willing to give you projects if you're willing to ask for them.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Construction is never something I saw myself working in as a finance major so my biggest piece of advice is to give it a shot. Because even though they are construction there's so much more to it and so many opportunities to do what you like.

LEAD Intern

Even with Covid, Kiewit was very adamant about allowing us to have this opportunity. The team I was placed with was very welcoming and connected me with tasks that I was interested in.

Reach out to as many people in different departments as you can.

Field Engineer Intern

What I liked

I loved my co workers and being able to get out of an office chair and actually go outside throughout the day. The work was very in front of you and rewarding when you can see the end product.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken more weekends off

Advice

I would recommend saying yes to just about anything someone asks you to do, and to always ask questions. Saying yes opens opportunities, and asking questions is important because there is so much to learn at a job that you will never learn in school.

Field/Office Engineer

What I liked

Lots of hands-on experience working in the field. Office work always was corresponding to fieldwork and was very helpful in getting a better understanding of the entire project itself. People were mostly nice and helpful.

What I wish was different

I was unaware before accepting the full-time position of how many hours would be expected of me. I was working 12+ hours every day and was expected to come in on weekends as well. This wouldn't have been such a big issue if I was getting paid for all my hours, but apparently my position was "exempt" and so I was only getting paid for 40 hours per week. Absolutely no balance between work and life. When I expressed my feelings about the hours, I was told by some that I just wasn't "strong enough to handle real-life work" and that "it's just the way it is".

Advice

Ask about expected hours before you accept the position. Interns will get paid every hour they work though (over/double time). Expect to move around a lot and not have any time to plan for it. I was given one week's notice of where I would be placed and so I had to live in a hotel for a few weeks until I found an apartment.

Tax Accountant Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the community environment on the floor, and being able to mingle with the other interns. `The summer golf outing was also a lot of fun.

What I wish was different

I wish we had multiple projects over the summer instead of one. It kind of got a little bit repetitive by the end of the summer, but it's such a great company and a great environment to be in.

Advice

Get to know the other interns. It is a great opportunity to get to know others and create good relationships. Also, try to learn as much as you can about what you're doing.

I liked the company culture but didn’t love what I was doing. A lot of the time it felt like they had to come up with work for me on the spot

field engineer

What I liked

A true hands on experience. My previous internships were mostly done in the office designing projects, but in this case I got to see how the projects are actually built.

What I wish was different

Kiewit was great at taking care of their interns in the office. Unfortunately, sometimes the field interns were forgotten about. They still took good care of us, but we didn't receive the total Kiewit experience.

Advice

Try something new! Even if it ends up being something you dont enjoy, you can now narrow your job search.

Structural design intern

The culture and environment. The amount of attention and care they give to all interns. The reward to put your name on big real world projects.

What I wish was different

Nothing this experience was amazing and taught me more then i thought it would of.

Advice

Learn how to manage your time. That will be a huge part of your success. Managing multiple task given to you and finished on time and on budget.

Construction Estimator

What I liked

I learned so much and was treated like a full time employee. Kiewit allows you to grow and has so many incredible opportunities.

What I wish was different

I wish I had started working earlier rather than waiting a few weeks after school ended. There isn’t anything I would have changed besides that.

Advice

Before asking a question, be sure to try and answer the question yourself. Google is a great resource. Don’t waste your managers time with questions that are a google search away.

Construction Estimator Intern

I received a well rounded experience of the entire estimating process from start to finish.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to get out and see more of the active job sites.

Advice

I think it’s important to diversity your experience as an intern. Get out in the field one year and go in the office another year. Hey are both equally valuable and will give more insight on how the business is ran and where you see yourself fitting in.

Field Engineer Intern

Supervisors listened to what I said, and If I wanted to do something different, I had the ability to ask and do it.

What I wish was different

I did not always get along with some of the employees I worked with. Some were very nice and helpful; others were gossipy and discussed topics in poor taste for a professional environment.

Advice

Take charge, they are sometimes hesitant to give you meaningful work, since you wont be there long, but ask and you shall receive.

Estimator

What I liked

Well organized, large company with a tight knit family style culture. They want to do things the right way, how they should be done, rather than the fast or cheap way.

What I wish was different

I spent my entire internship as an estimator at the regional office. It would have been nice to get some field experience, but I will get that opportunity during my next internship.

Advice

Be professional, and motivated to learn and apply the skills you pick up along the way.

Design-Build Intern

What I liked

Kiewit treats their interns extremely well. They reimbursed me for relocation and provided corporate housing for me to live in during my internship with two roommates who were also interns for the company. I got to work on a really cool project and felt like I was really part of the team. They also hosted an intern event and took us out to see a few jobsites.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd gotten to be out of the office more often, and the work I was doing was often monotonous. I wish I'd gotten to do a bit more of a variety of work.

Advice

Ask lots of questions and make sure to voice what you want to get out of your internship. If you want to go and see a job site, ask. If you're not enjoying the work you're doing, say so. They're very good at meeting your needs but they won't know you're unhappy unless you tell them. Make an effort to get to know your coworkers.
