I liked gaining hands on experience with finance and presenting to executives while also collaborating with other college students.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have met more executives to network.

Advice

I would advise students to prepare themselves by looking into government contracting. I would also recommend practicing functions in excel and python.

Take csci 3081w before the internship. It will prepare you well of what it is like working in JIRA and scrum environment and using c++

The environment was very relaxed and everyone was willing to help out whenever I had a question.

What I wish was different

I felt like I was dead weight a lot of the time since I was a systems engineer on a mostly CS based team. I would have liked to be on a team that required more of my skills so that I could have contributed more to the project.

What I liked

Learned a lot of new things. I worked on mostly a front-end tool. The team was fantastic! Everyone was very supportive of one another. Other engineers were always willing to help.

What I wish was different

Overall, the project was interesting in the beginning but became stale towards the end. They were not very responsive to letting me work on other things that I wanted to learn.

Advice

Overall had a positive experience, but would likely not return.

Mechanical Engineer Intern

What I liked

I liked that I was able to work on the designs for several different products. I was able to really see the product development process throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish the other employees had not been working remotely. For a majority of the internship I didn't see my supervisor more than twice in the first 2 months or so.

Advice

Be prepared to do some iterative tasks. You make something then someone reviews it and you change it to make it better.

Corporate Finance & Strategy Summer Analyst

What I liked

Responsibility given after brief period of training was equivalent to being a first year analyst working full time. Great exposure to various lines of business (strategy, business development, corporate finance)

What I wish was different

Bureaucratic systems and processes result in slow pace of workflows sometimes.

Advice

Work hard, treat every day as an evaluation of your ability. The little things count. Stay positive and optimistic no matter the task!

What I liked

The project was very interesting, and I was able to make large contributions even as an intern. Leidos makes great choices for their tech stacks and understands how to properly develop for the cloud. Management was excellent, and the times we worked was flexible. There are some extremely talented engineers at the Charlottesville office.

What I wish was different

Corporate security policies and restrictions often made it difficult to create software, however they visited the office to work with us to improve the experience.

Advice

The ability to learn new technologies, implement best practices, and work on a team are the most important aspects of the job.
