Human Resources Intern
April 2019 • Alma, MI
What I liked
The hands on experience with real work and tasks that are necessary for the company to function. Being able to utilize techniques and strategies taught by the business department at Alma College and apply it to real world situations. Also, being assigned tasks that are unique to my strengths so I can showcase my abilities in that area. There were also some tasks that were challenging which I was able to demonstrate my abilities to handle challenges and overcome my weaknesses by using the proper resources.
What I wish was different
The only thing that I wish would have been different is more work outside of the office. I was able to travel both locally and to Grand Rapids for a trainings, conferences, and even a retirement party. I really enjoyed that aspect of the job and I wish I would have had more opportunities to do that kind of stuff.
Advice
For anyone that is looking into getting a job or internship, use your resources at Alma College. The CSO is a great place to get your resume ready and do mock interviews. The most important thing, in my opinion, to getting the job or internship you are setting out for is first landing the interview, through networking and having a stellar resume, and then creating a great first impression with your interviewer. It is not all about how great your credentials are, being a standout person by having confidence and being yourself is equally as important.

Mortgage Clerk Intern
June 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI
What I liked
My boss was extremely supportive from the first day of work. She effectively trained me to be prepared for each task at hand, and then gave me the freedom to perform through my time with the company. Mercantile's company culture is amazing and they are a company that I'd love to work for moving forward.
What I wish was different
Nothing within the job itself should have been different. But I do think I was underpaid according to the tasks I completed and the value I brought to the company and in comparison to other internships.
Advice
Ask questions constantly to ensure you and your supervisor are on the same page. Set up meetings with your boss on at least a monthly basis to ensure your own success and allow for opportunities to improve.
