Software Developer Intern

February - April 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

what I like about this internship was the fact that I learned so many new things. I learned about spring boot, Postman, Maven, Gradle, Tomcat webserver. I also learned about what is API such as SOAP API and Restful API.

What I wish was different

I wish that internship would have been longer, so I could have gotten a little bit more experience and learn more new things as well.

Advice

My advice would be to try to learn something new every day rather than staying in your comfort zone. In order to move forward, you have to keep learning, if you won't learn you will be left behind. Technology is changing every day and we need to learn to work with it.

Mechanical Intern

May - August 2019 • Elkhart, IN

What I liked

I wide range of experiences on the railroad, working with different departments, and all of the great people I got to work with.

What I wish was different

A little more work for the interns would have been nice. I don't believe that was unique to my location, but company wide for the interns.

Advice

Have fun! Talk to people, and don't be afraid to ask questions. So many people that I worked with were proud of their work and loved explaining and teaching me things.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Bellevue, OH

What I liked

The people you work with will feel more like family than co-workers. The guys working in the shop are very willing to answer any questions you may have and will even let you work alongside them at times! The internship program has an opening and closing event where you can meet all the interns from across the country, while learning more about how the railroad operates.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! There are a lot of people who have worked here for many years and are eager to pass on information. In my free time I would walk over to the locomotive shop and talk to the guys as they worked. I learned the a lot doing this and they would even let me use some of the equipment (with their help).

Cyber Security Co-Op

May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I loved the variety of different systems and cool projects I was able to help with. The security team was great and I was able to work on a help with most of the major projects while I was there.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more time, there are so many projects and one summer just is not enough time.

Advice

If you can carpool or ride mart into the city. The Pay is competitive but parking in midtown is astronomical.

Internal Audit Intern

May - July 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Atlanta was nice.

What I wish was different

Just about everything. The job posting was very misleading about what actual job duties were. The work was very tedious and underwhelming. There were no instructions to accomplish our work other than "just do it how they did it last year." There wasn't enough work to go around, so I finished all of my work 5 weeks early, sat there and read books for 2 weeks, and decided to end my internship 3 weeks prior to my expected date. Because I wasn't able to learn anything valuable, it was a huge waste of time.

Advice

Make sure you know what you're getting into. A company can advertise their positions so they sound meaningful and important, but your actual work can be very different.

Pricing Analyst

May - August 2017 • Norfolk, VA

What I liked

I was given a lot of responsibilities in this internship and was able to make a real contribution to my department. They didn't treat you like an intern and really valued what you had to say. While the work was difficult, I never felt intimidated or scared to ask for help.

What I wish was different

They didn't have a large group of interns, and I was unable to really meet with anyone my age during the summer making my off time boring.

Advice

Always ask questions and ask for more work if you have nothing to do. Cubicles are horrible if you have nothing to do.

Transporation Operations Intern

June - July 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I was right next to the manager at all times and got to see what the job is really like. My supervisor had us on a rotation program so I got to see all the different yards and job roles. I also because very familiar with all the managers and even had dinner with the CEO.

What I wish was different

It was a lot of job shadowing vs actually having things to work on.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and never say no to any opportunity given to you. Also even if you don't like aspects of a job or internship, learn how to flip that around and learn about yourself and what you are looking for in a future job.
