Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

I worked with a great team. There were opportunities to contribute to meaningful projects. Lots of opportunities to learn about the medical device industry and develop skills.

What I wish was different

Can be difficult working in such a big company. Sometimes difficult to get things done. In medical device it can also be difficult to get hands on experience with manufacturing equipment as quality is so important.

Advice

Meet as many people as you can in different groups and make sure that you are developing skills and getting meaningful results from projects everyday.

Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked how I was able to get exposure to the clinical side of things during the internship. I was invited to live scan sessions and get feedback from sonographers and other clinicians. I also liked how the project itself was tangible to an actual hardware device -- the ultrasound machines. I got to learn outside of software and work with other kinds of engineers on Fast Fourier Transforms. Everyone at the office was very friendly and approachable, resulting in an ideal work-in-person environment. I also loved how I was given the option to work remotely any day if desired.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been an official project description document that interns can refer to at the start of the internship, as well as outlined project goals and tasks. I also wish the people getting as intern mentors were not so busy that it was difficult to schedule one-on-one meetings to touch base on the intern project frequently.

Advice

If everything seems difficult, that means you are learning and actively being challenged!

I wish that I could have had a bigger impact at Philips.

Push for more work. I did not do this until week two and I should have started earlier. They are happy to give you more work if you need it!

Test Engineer Co-op

What I liked

The work environment is very challenging in that it forces you to either constantly become a stronger engineer or stagnate. While help is all around, projects generally require asking for help from a variety of people and consulting a number of sources. At first it can be really daunting and discouraging, but once you get the tempo, you're able to figure out what you need to improve in yourself in order to progress to the next objective. It has hard at the time, but looking back, I'm grateful.

What I wish was different

When I arrived, there were no resources left behind by past co-ops; it felt like I inherited a bit of a ghost town in that regard. It was difficult to figure out my expectations and responsibilities without any sort of reference. That's one thing I made sure to leave behind: a daily journal of my first three months.

Advice

Understand the end goal, figure out where you stand, and break down the steps to get the finish into bite-sized pieces. Check them off one at a time so you've turned big problems into a million solvable little ones.

What I liked

The work I was doing was directly applicable to company progress and innovation.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've had more time to complete more steps in my project. Medical devices is a very regulated industry because of safety concerns so the project I was assigned to was something ongoing in the company and 2 months wasn't enough to complete it. Otherwise, it was a great experience.

Advice

Don't worry about the medical devices field if you are not a BE. I joined the team as a mechanical engineer and my knowledge was enough to apply to the systems in use and I learned all relevant medical devices knowledge on the job.

I wish there had been a little bit more structure (this may have been due to the shifting roles of the managers when I started).

Advice

You should be a self starter. Be willing to ask for help, and really show what you can do and how you work.

Procurement Engineering Co-Op

What I liked

I had the opportunity to travel internationally with the company to a supplier. This was beneficial, as I was leading a negotiation that we led and I was able to be there in person to meet the executives I was working closely with, as well as see the manufacturing process for the parts we had outsourced to the site.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask very detailed questions about the kind of work you will be doing in your co-op to make sure it aligns with your personal goals. If you are working and you are unsatisfied with the work you are doing, speak up!
