Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Andover, MA

What I liked

I liked working for a defense company and knowing that I'm helping protect our country.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more females and overall diversity working at Raytheon. I think they need to work on bringing in more females and also more diversity training for some of the people already there. They also need to put more females in leadership roles. I also wish I started with a better sense of what my role would be.

Advice

Ask more about what you would be doing before you accept an offer.

Robotics Automation Intern

May - July 2019 • Andover, MA

What I liked

It was very flexible and I got a variety of projects to work on so I got to experience working with different sectors within Raytheon.

What I wish was different

I wish that it was more fast-paced and that is not really their fault it is just that for new projects to go through funding it takes a lot of time.

Advice

Definitely expect the 9-80 schedule which is great because you get every other Friday off!

Software Engineer

May - August 2019 • Tewksbury, MA

What I liked

I liked getting the real world experience it was awesome to be able to see what my life will actually be like when I graduate.

What I wish was different

I wish I was in a different department at Raytheon.

Advice

I would say that students should get an internship to help them discover if it’s really the job they want to get into upon graduation. It’s the best way to put out feelers rather than to wait until they graduate.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I loved how I was actually able to experience the life of an engineer outside of school, school and work life are a lot different. I learned so much from this internship and I’m glad I got to experience manufacturing engineering.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more time to experience the company.

Advice

Be self motivated and driven because they treat you like an actual employee and as a business, they can’t hold your hand through every project.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The team I worked with was incredible and very willing to help me learn and progress during my internship. I learned a lot and was given lots of opportunities to prove my skills. I was able to come to my supervisor whenever I was finished with a task, and he would do his best to find something worthwhile and challenging to give me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had applied earlier and pushed harder so I could have gone to an earlier hiring event. They gave us the opportunity to search around and try and find the internship that fit best with our interests, but by the time I went to the hiring event (at the end of January) all of the software engineering internship positions were filled.

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply, no matter how little experience you think you have. I worked with people who had just completed their freshman year and were able to be successful at the internship and learned a ton. Also once you have an internship, don't be afraid to ask questions and struggle with things. The best praise I got was when I struggled through something, found what I thought was a solution, and then asked about it. It can be kind of intimidating to mess up, but independence is rewarded.

Configuration Management Intern

May 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

During this internship, I learned something new everyday. There is also a heavy emphasis on working with your team and supporting your program, so I was able to make so many valuable connections that I will stay in touch with professionally, with some I even call friends now.

What I wish was different

During the first couple of weeks, the onboarding experience was kind of stressful. I think this is because the amount of training that is done all at once, so maybe breaking it up with job shadowing in between would have been beneficial.

Advice

My advice would be to ask as many questions as possible. Most of the processes and information will be totally new, so showing initiative and a willingness to learn is appreciated.

Tech Student Junior

June - August 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I liked learning about missiles, being in the lab everyday where I did hands-on work, the 9/80 schedule having every other Friday off, and getting to understand what daily work life would be as an electrical engineer in the DoD contracting industry.

What I wish was different

That Raytheon's location was different than in Tucson because I don't really care for the desert especially in the summer months.

Advice

Internships are very important, even more so than school work or grades because they give you an idea of what you will be doing as a working professional in your field.

Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Richardson, TX

What I liked

The opportunity to work in the Department of Defense industry. I liked working in a group setting and delivering results on time to my managers. Raytheon offered a unique experience to the summer interns that I got to engage in.

What I wish was different

The difficulty of being an athlete and trying to increase my experience as an Engineer. The football department made it hard for me to choose the correct path to my future.

Advice

The experience alone helped me get a job at a different company. The projects and connections helped leverage me in the future.

What I liked

The ease of transitioning from a class environment into a professional environment. Also, generally everyone working there cares about their job as well as their coworkers.

What I liked

The people and exciting technology being worked on.

More interactions with other team members instead of having a designated "intern" project. It would have been nice to work on something full-time employees were collaborating on.
