What I liked

The network I built the summer that I worked there. I worked with so many amazing like-minded individuals. This was by far one of the best opportunities I had while in college.

What I wish was different

I wish I had asked more colleagues for their contact information to stay in touch.

Technical Services Intern

June - September 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I had an incredible mentor that did everything in her power to make this internship as educational and fulfilling as possible. I loved that I was able to get hands-on work in the field I am pursuing.

What I wish was different

It was very difficult for me to meet and interact with other interns. I feel like I missed out on a great networking opportunity with my peers.

Advice

In an ideal internship, everyone there wants you to learn and gain experience. Don't be afraid to ask for more opportunities or be nervous asking what feels like a dumb question.

Learning and Public Engagement Museum Education Intern

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I greatly appreciated learning about dialogic education methods and inclusion-based questioning in addition to having the opportunity to practice empathetic listening skills. The internship supervisors provided amazing hands-on instruction and support as well as helpful critiques enabling us to create our own thematic tours. It was exciting to be allowed to conduct my own inquiry-based tours and share insights about the Art Institute of Chicago's collections, its artists, and their subjects with people of all ages, abilities and cultures.

What I wish was different

I honestly wouldn't change anything.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share is to make sure you take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities the internship extends. This includes attending inter-departmental lectures and events so that you can gain a deeper understanding of cross-museum interaction and cooperation.
