One of aspects of this internship opportunity that I enjoyed the most, was interacting with the adolescents and their families. Families that come to the C.A.C. might not be in the best circumstances, and having the ability to feel safe and cared for during those times are what brought me absolute happiness.
The individuals that work at the Child Advocacy Center of Lapeer County are also what made this internship so enjoyable. Even though I was a psychology major in an environment focused on more social work, no one stopped me from exploring all the different areas that they had to offer. I loved helping out on the therapy side of the C.A.C. since it related to my degree, but my eyes were also opened to a new passion for safety awareness programs within school districts; something that the C.A.C. makes possible for Lapeer elementary school students.
Although I found myself fascinated and intrigued with how all areas of the C.A.C fluidly worked together to provide the services they do, the smaller aspects of the internship such as keeping the office clean, doing crafts, taking calls, etc. were even enjoyable. I genuinely have no complaints!
What I wish was different
Due to COVID-19, I was only able to be present one day of the week in office. I wish that I had more time available (within my school schedule and without a global pandemic) to spend more time in each area of the C.A.C.
There is a lot of information to be learned about within the jobs the C.A.C has, and even more information to learn how they all work together to serve the community! To have been present on days where all aspects of the C.A.C. are able to be utilized and experienced thoroughly would have been the only thing I wish had been different.
Of course the factors of the pandemic and personal schedule interfered with my opportunity to accomplish that, but I am beyond happy that C.A.C. Lapeer was able to accommodate the best they could!
Advice
There are going to be uncomfortable aspects of this internship. It is okay to feel those feelings and act accordingly. Everyone that works there are open ears to your feelings just as much as they are to the clients they serve.
I believe that this is important, and it comes with the nature of the what Child Advocacy Centers is focused around. Families that may utilize The Child Advocacy Center may not have seen, heard, or felt peace and safety in awhile. Going out of your way to create comfort is the best way (in my opinion) of making your impression and bringing comfort.
The best advice I can give is to try and make the C.A.C. an oasis for those that may have been traveling in the desert for awhile.
