I loved the coordination between the team I was with and the communication with the Sub-Contractors.
What I wish was different
I wish I was out in the field more. I was on the closing part of a project and was stuck in the office doing change orders.
Advice
ALWAYS ask questions. Be stupid now, not later.

Construction Superintendent Intern
May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE
What I liked
I really enjoyed my team as well as the responsibility I was given throughout my time there. I was able to take on many different roles and experience different parts of the industry.
What I wish was different
I liked Omaha but I would’ve also liked to try a bigger city location.
Advice
Definitely don’t go in acting like you know everything. Many of the guys on site have years more experience than you do so soak up as much knowledge from everyone there.

Field engineer
June - August 2018 • Albany, NY
What I liked
This job was extremely involved. The company does a great job getting you the resources and the help to be an asset to their team.
What I wish was different
I wish I got more experience in creating design or at least being a part of that process. However, it’s a field job, so field experience was the most important.
Advice
Ask contractors and laborers questions. They might be the lowest on the totem pole in the tree of responsibility, but many of them have been doing this for decades and they are very good at what they do, and will help you gain practical knowledge that a lot of engineers lack.

Accounting Intern
June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

It was interesting to learn about the construction management industry. I also had the opportunity to increase my knowledge surrounding engineering. I learned a lot more about various topics than I expected, which actually was very beneficial during the summer 2020 internship interviewing process.
What I wish was different
I wish I got less tedious work or learned a little more about their accounting process at the beginning to the experience.
Advice
Ask questions and for more work when you have down time, it allows you to learn more about an industry and other careers. The people at this company love their jobs and love to teach you new things.

Co-op (assistant superintendent)
August 2017 - January 2018 • Lexington, KY
What I liked
Learning the different aspects and terminology of construction management. Communicating with different trades and nurses to get the job done in the safest and smartest fashion.
What I wish was different
I wish there was more initial training involved. My supervisor was obviously very busy, and sometimes I felt like I was left to learn on my own. I felt like I spent the first couple weeks just trying to get acclimated to everything.
Advice
Ask plenty of questions and be sure to talk to everyone on the job site. Having a good reputation with the different trades goes a long way when solving issues and asking them to complete tasks.

I enjoyed the people I worked with. Turner Construction has great employees and really take the time to help you understand everything on and off the construction site.
What I wish was different
I wanted a little more communication with HR after my internship had concluded.

Intern
July - August 2017 • New York City, NY
What I liked
What I liked about working with Turner Construction Company was the real world experience I obtained. I was never stuck filing papers or organizing the office. I was either involved out in the field or doing office work.
What I wish was different
I wish that the project I was sent to was not in the closing stages of completion. Because of this, not much field work was going on. Therefore, most of my time was spent in the office.
Advice
Be organized. Construction management is all about organization and if they see an intern who is well-organized and motivated, they will not be disappointed.

June - September 2019 • Seattle, WA
What I liked
I loved the environment and my coworkers. Everyone was friendly and easygoing. It was easy to fit in and I learned so much in the short period of time.
What I wish was different
I wish that there had been a better system for the interns to connect with the higher ups in the company. I managed to set up those meetings myself but it would have been nice to have that already organized as well.
Advice
I would say to not be afraid to ask questions. Everyone was very willing to help and guide you through anything. Don't worry about admitting what you don't know.

What I liked
The connections I made not only within Turner but also with subcontractors and associate partners was important to me. The people I met and interacted with regularly were an absolute pleasure to work with.
What I wish was different
I wish the project I was on was further into the construction phase. I also wish I collected more business cards.
Advice
ASK FOR BUSINESS CARDS FROM EVERYONE! Even the person sitting next to you who’s email you basically have memorized. A business card will last longer than your memory.

Project Engineer Intern
June - August 2018 • Livermore, CA
What I liked
I loved the team I worked with, they were all very welcoming and helpful. The information I learned has direct applications to what I would be doing post graduation so that was very rewarding for me to learn.
What I wish was different
The only thing I wish had been differnent was the pace that they taught me at. I wish it was slightly more face paced in the beginning, but it was understandable why it wasn't.
