Wildlife Rehabilitation Internship- Summer

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic at the Howell Nature Center treats thousands of injured and orphaned Michigan-native wildlife each year with the goal of releasing healthy animals back to the wild. 

Interns assist in the care of patients, including cleaning cages, preparing and feeding diets, providing enrichment, feeding neonates, and assisting in medical treatments. Interns also assist with general cleaning and housekeeping duties.

Requirements:

  • Able to work in all kinds of weather conditions, including rain and heat
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to carry 50 lb on occasion
  • Must be working toward a degree in biology, zoology, environmental studies, conservation, or related field
  • Preferred experience working in animal husbandry (not required)

Responsibilities:

  • Care for neonatal wildlife, including syringe-feeding and tube-feeding
  • Clean enclosures and clinic areas
  • Prepare diets and feed animals
  • Prepare and offer enrichment
  • Assist in medical treatments such as administering medication and fluids and wound care
  • Perform fecal examinations
  • Record keeping
  • Monitor behavior and condition of patients
  • Assist in message recording from Wildlife Helpline

Time Commitment:

  • 24 hours per week from May-September (flexible with end dates due to school start dates)
  • Some weekend shifts
