Global Wealth and Investment Management Intern

June 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the responsibility as an intern to be able to contribute to a Wealth Management group's client base. Also, I had the opportunity to learn a lot from full-time Financial Advisors at Merrill Lynch.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything about my experience.

Advice

It is important to begin networking early on in the Fall Semester for a summer internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more group projects. It would've given me the experience I needed in a real life setting

Do no interview for a job you are not passionate about. Employers have a way of picking out people who want pay vs people who want that specific job.

Advisor Development Program

June - August 2017 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

Everyday was an opportunity to experience a new part of the business and to explore all the the roles that we could be doing (potentially). The work environment was great and everybody was extremely friendly and open to our questions.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had been given more projects throughout the summer.

Advice

Make sure you network! You meet so many people that could be a potential benefit to your career search; don't be afraid to make connections.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Great opportunity to take ownership of projects and a lot of responsibility is given to those who demonstrate the ability to deliver on performance - which is a definite plus at a junior level. Really friendly environment as well and people are willing to help at the firm.

What I wish was different

I would have liked the internship to start a little later since training happens during exams, but given Stanford's schedule is different from the mass majority of schools, I don't think that will be happening at all

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to senior members of the team/firm. If done in good nature, everyone is extremely open and willing to help with professional development. Additionally, take notes for questions you do ask so you won't need to ask anyone the same thing twice.

Financial Advising Intern

June - August 2017 • Scottsdale, AZ

What I liked

There was structure in the sense that we were given weekly tasks and monthly goals, but I loved that the internship allowed for a lot of flexibility in what I chose to do during my time at work. I could focus on internship specific goals one day, interview advisors the next, sit down with a client, etc.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of emphasis on helping advisors with technology and social media--it was a tangible way to make a difference, but I would rather learn more about advising and conducting client or market research.

Advice

Figure out what you want from the internship beforehand. Think about what you'd like your day to day to look like, and what your focus is. I needed introductory knowledge on financial advising as a career, so I interviewed over 30 advisors about their personal experience and career advice. Another intern focused on investment banking and worked with advisors on the technicalities of being a financial advisor: assessing stocks, calculating betas, etc.

Wholesale Credit Summer Analyst

June - August 2017 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I was very involved with the role and was doing tasks that the actual analysts there were doing. I was assigned a peer analyst who would walk me through day to day tasks and every day I was learning something new and being challenged. I really liked the people I was working with. They really invest in their interns!

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing. This was the best internship experience I have had. They really invest in their interns. I got to go to all of the meetings, listen to executives speak, travel to NYC to be trained, had two presentations throughout the summer, and got assigned work that the other analysts were doing.

Advice

Network as much as you can while you are there. Ask as many VPs, Directors, other analysts out to coffee and lunch and ask them questions or advice. This was really beneficial for me to see if I could see myself ending up working here.

Global Banking and Markets Summer Analyst

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked that I was able to be exposed to many different kinds of work. I was given my own projects, had the opportunity to shadow my director, and regularly sat in on meetings and conference calls.

What I wish was different

I wish my second rotation was more geared towards what I'm interested in.

Advice

During any summer internship, it is crucial to network with the people around you. Speaking with other professionals and getting different perspectives on career paths can help immensely.

Business Development Intern

September 2016 - April 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really liked working in a professional enviroment, and learned a lot about what it takes to be a Financial Advisor. I kept up to date with Finance news, and learned a lot about financial products.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more meaningful work, in terms of being a Financial Advisor. I was mostly cold calling, which is a great skill to have, but I felt separated from the rest of the team.

Advice

Get ready to cold call, and you need to have thick skin in order to succeed. If you don't, you are going to struggle
