I wish it would have been easier! Some days I felt like my head was going to explode.

Advice

Pursue what you enjoy doing, and do everything you can to be better at it! I was able to create something for a professor to use in future classes because I had an interest in both programming and science.

What I liked

The work schedule is relatively flexible, my manager tends to give me a lot of independent work and trusts me to get the work done meaning I can come in and leave at a flexible time schedule. All co-workers are like mentors, excited to help you and genuinely interested in your goals. Job is super interesting and I never fear having to go into work. Love what I do!

What I wish was different

Nothing, things have been great!

Advice

It is a very involved job and company, you will always be busy and you complete serious work that will directly affect a team or the company. You start at the bottom, like most companies, but what you do still matters and is important to management. Keep your head down and put in strong effort and the position will be very rewarding. Also... learn how to play golf.

I had the ability to work closely with Financial Advisors and see their day to day tasks. I also liked that I was able to earn my Bloomberg certification while on the job.

I wish the internship was more of a hands-on learning experience.

Advice

If you are an intern and you want to get the most out of it, reach out to the Financial Advisors and ask questions about their business. They are more than likely happy to help you so you can see if this is the business for you.

I really enjoyed the 2 projects that I worked on and the opportunity to see how banks function from the inside.

What I wish was different

I wish I was placed in a headquarters or corporate office and not a financial center branch. I was given instructions remotely by a program manager and I would have preferred a more hands on experience with other interns.

Advice

Customer service will always be relevant in the workforce no matter how great technology becomes. Also, it is great to intern with Bank of America because they encourage different opportunities based on your passions/interests. BofA offered me the opportunity to intern for Merrill Lynch OR Bank of America next summer without the need to reapply or interview again.

Advisory Development Program Intern

What I liked

The entire experience was great. I learned a lot in 10 weeks. Weeks 1-3 was spent learning about the banking industry and the types of regulations that are imposed on it. Weeks 3-10 were spent on multiple different proprietary projects. Overall, I spent 10 weeks learning, networking, and building my business acumen.

What I wish was different

I wish I had someone to mentor me through the pre-internship process. After I accepted the internship, I had months to prepare during school but I didn't really know how to prepare.

Be bold and shoot your shots. Also, do your research!

What I liked

I liked the freedom you had to explore the company. I was able to connect with people from various sectors of the firm for informational interviews. In this process, I found that the BoA community is very supportive of their new analyst and the people at the firm truly do care about your success whether or not it is with BoA.

What I wish was different

I wish the program had clearer goals for the interns. The job description did not match the internship day to day activities. Regardless, there are many opportunities to grow during the internship. You have to take the initiative if you want to see this growth. I still would have liked to learn more hard skills throughout the experience.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice would be to take initiative and stay positive throughout the experience.

Marketing and Corporate Communications Intern

What I liked

I liked being able to work with upper-level employees and take on different projects throughout the summer, mainly internal and external publications that bank put out. What I liked most of this was that these projects were all real tasks that had to be done, not just made-up projects for interns. I also got to work different events that the company held. At the end of the summer, the interns were separated into teams and had to come up with ideas on how to market mobile banking usage to low-to-moderate income consumers, which we then presented to the bank's senior executives.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I feel like I had such a great experience and learned so much. Working there definitely made me feel more confident and capable of being able to take on a full-time marketing or comms job when I finish school.

Advice

I would say that you shouldn't be afraid to talk to people and ask to take on different projects. Sometimes as an intern you may feel like you are bothering the full-time employees, but that's not the case; they really want to help you. Also, since you have to be there 40 hours a week you may as well take advantage and learn as much as you can. Chances are people need help with different projects, so aside from your own learning you are actually helping out another permanent employee as well.

Business Analyst Intern

What I liked

Technology touches every part of the corporation, sustaining every deal and business decision that is made. From low-level programming to projects involving mass amounts of data, cutting-edge technology is vital to the company’s success. Through innovation and ongoing investment in new and relevant technologies, technology is placed at the focal point of the corporate strategy. The culture at Bank of America is one that I have not found anywhere else. The company fosters long-term career development and also helps employees fight complacency. It is very easy to transition to areas in the bank that interest you, or to learn more about other areas through their online resources and education systems. The culture supports fostering new ideas, diversity, and innovation.

What I wish was different

The only things that I did not enjoy about my internship was that I missed out on the opportunity to interact frequently with the other interns and also the ten-week framework. My building only staffed three interns, while the other locations had upwards of forty interns that had the opportunity to socialize and network with one another. I did, however, have the opportunity to meet other employees in my line of business and their interns at a Chief Technology Organization social in the middle of my internship. The internship only lasted for ten weeks, and I feel as though that was not a sufficient amount of time to learn about our teams. I wish I could have had a deeper exposure to vulnerability and non-permitted technology data tracking, but the time frame would not permit such extensive training.

Advice

The best pieces of advice that I could offer to any Information Technology/Management Information Systems student, or any student who is seeking or about to start an internship: -Refresh on course curriculum and technical skill set before the start of the internship. It is always good to come in prepared. -Do not underestimate the things that you worked on during your internship. One of your “projects” could actually have been used to help the team that you are working on and become a valuable tool that they can use in the future. -Take notes and write down everything you do daily. This can help assure that you leave the internship with a record of tangible results and accomplishments. -Do not be afraid to ask questions and take initiative. This is a learning experience and most likely your first real experience in the corporate world, you are not expected to know everything. -Seek advice from your manager or peers and be open-minded about new ideas and processes. -Tackle tough problems head-on by thinking out of the box and share your successes. -I cannot express the importance of networking enough, it is extremely critical to your success long-term. It is important to build relationships with your peers, manager, and other employees. -And lastly, enjoy yourself.
