Polymers PhD intern

June - September 2021 • Fremont, CA

What I liked

I had complete ownership of the project I was assigned to, and my manager outlined a weekly plan to make sure I am on track. I mostly liked my manager's hands-off style, it gave me a lot of flexibility to read up on the research project. Thanks to his management style, I could produce patent-worthy work by the end of summer. I loved the collegial environment in the R&D center, and everyone was very friendly and supportive to the interns. I got multiple opportunities to present my work both at group meetings and in client meetings. My mentor assigned through the internship program was in Marketing, which helped me get a better sense of the company operation beyond R&D. The location was great, and the pay was comfortable to spend the summer in the bay area.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to spend a little more time interacting with my manager about things outside our project and learn more on company structure, other projects he was working on etc. My hands were so full with my project that I had to stretch myself thin to make time to network. I was promised I could learn some related techniques in my final weeks there, but I was pushed to work on extensions of my project and could not make time for those additional skills. other Most senior members of the R&D team were still working from home or hybrid, which limited opportunities to network.

Advice

Specifically regarding PhD research internships at TE, I would make sure to ask for the manager's time to discuss expectations from both sides, in order to aide your personal career goals in addition to working on one project. Additionally, I would advise being very proactive about networking in general.

My direct manager was wonderful, very encouraging and helpful. They also trusted me with a large role and allowed me to run meetings and complete important tasks that will actually be used by the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten more coding experience.

Sustaining Product Engineer

May - August 2019 • Hemet, CA

What I liked

Great work environment/people, very well-run manufacturing plant. Great pay and relocation stipend.

What I wish was different

Branch was closing when I got there, so I did not have normal responsibilities as a sustaining product engineer.

Advice

This position is not available because the branch is closing. I loved the company, but they did not treat their employees with much respect during the closing of the branch - they left their employees out to dry with no back-up plan after the branch closes, and that did not reflect well on me.

Signal Integrity Engineering Intern

Positive work environment and amazing coworkers. I got to learn a niche subject of Electrical Engineering and was provided with rewarding and challenging work experience.

What I wish was different

I wish the intern network was better. Connecting with other interns was difficult.

Advice

Do not be afraid to speak up about what you are interested in. This will help your manager a lot when determining projects for you to work on.

Corporate Communications Intern

June 2018 • Middletown, PA

What I liked

TE had a really good intern program with fun events and was a great way to meet people in different areas (especially engineering!). I never pictured myself at a technology and manufacturing company, but TE does so much that you can go into whatever interests you. I currently still work for TE part-time remotely while I am at school, which is a great opportunity!

What I wish was different

I was the only intern in my department, and because it is such a big company, there were 50 interns on my site between 5 buildings. It was kind of hard to get to know the other interns and departments. There were some opportunities, but not enough. It took awhile for me to meet the interns, and we started having lunch altogether by mid-summer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and get experience in something you never thought about doing!

Better lunch spots nearby and a more social environment.
