What I liked

The company really cares about the employees! Offering water, ice cream, and fun treats every day, for FREE!

What I wish was different

Amazon hires anyone who can pass the assessment online. This results in a mix of people. I wish some of people would be more understanding and work harder.

Advice

Amazon is an amazing company, but not for the frail. It was a lot of heavy lifting, but overall it was very much worth it!

Team manager

June 2016 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The flexibility to complete the work was more than I could expect.

What I wish was different

I wish they had less focus on metrics and reports and more focus on people leadership and engagement

Advice

Don’t settle for the current state of a position, you don’t have to have a manager title to be a leader of your peers and make change.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

It was a great intern experience! I had a mentor and a well defined project. I got to learn about the technology they use such as AWS. My team was full of very nice and helpful people. I had 1 on 1’s on a weekly basis with my manager.

What I wish was different

I didn’t like having to present so many times (4). Also there were many meetings I went to that didn’t really have anything to do with me. I could have spent the time working on my project.

Advice

Be involved during meetings.

Warehouse

July - August 2019 • Sacramento, CA

What I liked

The pay. You don't need a resume at all. As long as you are at least 18, pass the drug test and graduated HS then they will accept you.

What I wish was different

That they had air conditioning and a better system when it came to packaging

Advice

I advice people to make sure they can stand for 10+ hours consistently for 4-5 days before applying to the job. Get comfortable shoes, bring food.

Amazon Shopper

May 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It's an easy to do job that requires little to no real experience. I can set my own schedule within the flexible parameters of the job. The evenly paced environment makes for maneuverability. I've made several friends that i enjoy seeing when I clock in. I can freely move between store locations that are open to availability.

What I wish was different

A more stable work schedule, without having to compete with coworkers for availability for hours. A pay increase for part time employees. More concrete communication between the Corporate management and the workforce at specific times. More space to effectively work.

Advice

Prepare for competition between coworkers. Prepare for incredibly intense workouts depending on the layout of the store and the number and type of items per order. Prepare for clashes between coworkers, managers, delivery drivers, and most Whole Foods employees. Always learn the atmosphere of each specific store. Always pay attention to the time, when hours drop at 6:17 they will immediately be taken if you're not quick enough. Always worry about the job first, and keep an air of ambivalence. Always get to know your manager.

Parcel Truck Driver

June - August 2019 • Richmond, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed they pay of course but I also liked exploring places I never been in the Bay Area such as Sonoma, American Canyon, and Fairfax. You’re kind of your own boss out on the road by yourself. Some of the neighborhoods are beautiful and because they’re away from the hustle and bustle of urban metropolitan areas there’s more wildlife. I could see and hear lots of red tail hawks, turkeys roaming the front yards of people’s homes while they were away working and goats grazing on a hill behind the apex of a cul-de-sac. I also saw cougar tracks for the first time. There’s some magnificent views in the wine country. I saw homes that rivaled some in St. Francis Woods with awe inspiring views of the vineyards they overlooked.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked an earlier shift. When the sun goes down in places like Moraga the neighborhood becomes extremely dark and it’s hard to see some addresses. You can’t identify the the critters in the grass and brush either, only hear them. Its creepy. I also wish that people who have dogs would lock them up if they’re expecting a package.

Advice

My advice to anyone that wants to deliver for Amazon is if hired is: 1 get a good night’s rest, 2 eat something light and energizing before your shift, 3 keep your water in a Hydro-Flask or similar aluminum water bottle, in the summer you might need more than 42 oz I recommend 64 oz for a shift. Number 4 pack snacks and a lunch to save time and money because you only get 30 minutes to eat and it’s timed by your delivery device. Number 5, keep a hat and sunglasses, 6 pack a sweater, it can be blazing hot during the day but night substantially cooler, 7 comfortable shoes with good soles, you will put in over 10,000 steps a day easily. Number 8 watch for dogs when entering gates and fenced off properties, I almost got bitten twice, 9 Take your time and observe all angles when navigating in tight places. A couple of guys hired after me returned to the warehouse missing the rear windows of their van because they reversed into low hanging branches. The last bit of advice I have is to bring your own Bluetooth speaker for music. Only a handful of the vans have Bluetooth or auxiliary ports for your phone. If you don’t like the radio pack a portable speaker too.

Sales Intern

June - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Rapidly moving environment, exciting innovation all around you, and great cohort of intern peers. Excellent two week bootcamp with World class speakers and phenomenal training. So many resources at your fingertips and an incredible network if you leverage it.

What I wish was different

More interaction with management, at times it was difficult to know if I was doing a good job because it is a very "self-sufficient" style culture.

Advice

Soak it all in! Learn as much as you can and experience the new city to the maximum. After long work days, it can be hard to go be social or explore new areas, but it will be worth it! :) Meet as many people as possible and always be looking for a mentor.

Whole Foods shopper

May 2019 • Rochester, MI

What I liked

Very flexible job. You are allowed to choose your own hours and cancel shifts 24 hours ahead of time with no questions asked. Must work only 4 hours a month minimum. Pay can be raised at any time and while the hours are capped to 25 hours in any 7 day rolling period, we do raise our hour cap frequently if needed. The job is simple as well. If you can grocery shop, you are already qualified for this job.

What I wish was different

Our work area can be a tad unsafe sometimes. We work around people coming in and doing their normal grocery shopping, so we must be on alert at all times. We do have a standard of 60 items per hour, so we must be quick on our feet. Plus our staging areas for orders can be a bit hectic if many people are in our small room. The size of the room is just a problem for my location though. The other locations have much bigger rooms.

Advice

This job is incredible for students with a heavy course load and not much time to work. Since you only need to work one 4 hour shift a month, it is easy to take most of a month off to study while still keeping your job.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

Met a lot of cool and incredibly smart people, and learned way more than I ever expected over the course of three short months.

What I wish was different

I had to commute about 2 hours each day because I decided to live at home, I wish I had found something a little closer to my job site.

Advice

Don't feel too pressured, ask for help, and you'll figure stuff out eventually, even if nothing makes sense at first.
