Very flexible work hours and good hourly pay for a non-internship summer job

Software Development Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I was on a fantastic team of talented software engineers that were casual yet effective. I learned a lot from them throughout my internship. Also, we travelled to Seattle twice, one week each, which was a blast. The overall work atmosphere was pretty chill and conducive of learning.

What I wish was different

Honestly can't think of anything.

Advice

For one, really try to get an internship at Amazon over Summer, it's great. Second, don't be scared to ask a bunch of questions and take notes while doing so. I literally had a list of questions and their answers by the end of the first couple of weeks, which proved helpful. Your mentor and manager actually like it when you are expanding your understanding as much as you can.

Software Development Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

Fantastic team, ability to work directly on real, customer-facing projects, full ownership of project and vested involvement in decision-making process, excellent compensation, fun intern social/networking events, frequent intern-exclusive presentations from senior leadership and career-relevant leaders, beautiful campus, transportation accommodations, generous housing assistance

What I wish was different

More support in finding housing

Advice

Amazon is very driven based off its 14 leadership principles and emphasizes self-actualization, so if you want to ensure a successful experience there be sure to know and use as many of the leadership principles as you feasibly can. Additionally, for most tasks or problems, the onus is on you to come up with a solution however you can, so be sure that you are your own agent in networking and talking to others, using the plethora of internal and external resources at your disposal, and not being afraid to speak up if you need support. This certainly doesn't mean that you are on your own, but rather that the onus is on you to get the help that you need in completing a project.

Amazon Sort Center Associate

June - August 2019 • Concord, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexible hours that the sort center offered. The work force was also very diverse with many different cultures and age ranges which allowed me to learn from our differences. Also, the work was quantitatively rewarding because we saw exactly how many people we impacted every day. For example, during Prime Week, we helped 1.1 million people get their Amazon deliveries. The pay was great as well!

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have used my intellectual brain a little bit more. It was just a summer job, yet I missed being able to think to solve problems. At this job, all of the supervisors thought and told us what to do. Overall, the entire experience was overwhelmingly positive though.

Advice

My one piece of advise that I would share about this experience is to work hard and work well. Even though I was only employed for 2 months, the supervisors saw my hard work and I was rewarded for it. I recommend that everyone work hard because other people really do notice your effort and your determination to succeed.

Amazon Seasonal Sortation Associate

June - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

good pay, pretty low mental effort!

What I wish was different

the hours were a little rough and sometimes it was boring

Advice

the four-hour shifts at amazon warehouses are a lot more manageable than the 8-hour ones, because you often do the same task for an entire shift. The experience is also very dependent on the culture of the warehouse you're at, I had a good warehouse so it was pretty fun!

Software Development Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I had a great and supportive team, I got to own my whole project, there were some solid intern events, Seattle is amazing for the summer

What I wish was different

A bit difficult to get accustomed to developing with their massive codebase, hard to meet and stay in touch with other interns because there were so many of us, your experience is very dependent on your mentor/manager

Advice

Make sure your expectations are clear with your manager, delivering results is more important than anything else!
