Amazon

Software Developer Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the impact of the work I had at Amazon, the consistent and high quality mentorship I received, and the amazing location in the city of Seattle.

What I wish was different

I wish my team was slightly more talkative and the environment was more conducive to socializing, but overall I was really lucky to have as a positive and impactful of a team as the one I was placed in.

Advice

I would tell people to apply to early and never underestimate or undersell themselves. Our true potential is revealed to ourselves when we accomplish things we think we cannot.

HR Intern

June - August 2018 • Aurora, IL

What I liked

Very interesting research project that involved problem-solving, a lot of surveying associates, presenting, and writing a professional paper.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more experience working with managers, more personal interaction with my manager and others for guidance and help on my project.

Advice

The work is very different from office work. You are working with a lot of diverse people (ethnicity, education, work history, etc.), and you will get a lot of varying opinions on the company, your role, and management. There is naturally a lot of conflict that you will be subject to.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I was treated more than "just a intern". I was treated as a full time on my team and given the same responsibility as a full time engineer. It was difficult but I learned more than I could ever learn in just 3 months. It was much more than just learning how to code, but how to design, to take leadership of the project, to dive deep, and to challenge.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more bonding and networking activities among the interns. For my project, I wish that I was given a little bit more resources in the beginning to jump start. I had a hard time figuring out the resources in the beginning.

Advice

One piece of advice is to not be afraid to express as an intern but just be ready to defend and to own your project.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Focus on solving any problem you have with the use of technology. Amazon tackles many different spaces and the reason why they succeed is because it understands that technology is a set of tools it can use to rebuild the retail sector.

Software Development Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • Manhattan Beach, CA

What I liked

The team was tightly knit, knowledgeable, and experienced.

What I wish was different

I wish I had focused more on the team's primary mission, rather than a separate intern project. This is the nature of internships, however.

Advice

Amazon is a great company. It gives much autonomy to the various teams, so each team operates independently, which gives the experience a start-up feel (although the infrastructure is that of a large company, obviously). That said, your experience will vary depending on your team.

Operations Financial Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Kent, WA

What I liked

- My work as an intern was appreciated and considered. - I learned in abundance. Learned high standards, ownership, and accountability from the teams I worked with. I also learned technical skills that I was required to perform. - Met brilliant people. Not only made professional connections, I built strong relationships and friendships in my time there. - My team was great. My teammates were brilliant and made sure to give me a warm welcome to the team. - I loved the culture of Amazon Fulfillment, we needed to work at the highest level while having tons of fun. - My work was valued and respected, and I feel it had a positive impact for the company which translates to a better experience for the customers.

What I wish was different

Nothing to change.

Advice

- Network. Go to career events and connect with people. Connect – don't just ask "the right question"; meet and learn about the other person, and make sure he/she gets to know you. Build relationships – you never know if that person you met will land you a position at a nice place or can become a friend. - Be ready, and not afraid, to learn. I had to learn a lot to do a good job, but that learning was mostly driven by myself. As an intern I was empowered, but that also comes with the responsibility to learn, in a great part by yourself, from the vast resource library provided by the company. Don't be afraid, you'll learn as you go. - Take action, fast. In school we have sometimes an entire semester to finish a paper. We may start early, and spend a lot of time planning, perfecting, and revising it to get that A. In my role it was different; while we had to take informed actions, we had to act quickly and not suffer from "paralysis by analysis". Sometimes you don't need to have 100% of the answers before starting to implement a project.
