Goldman Sachs

Analyst (Investment Banking)

May - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the fact that I was able to challenge a lot of different aspects of myself in the business world. Although they knew that we were freshman who had little to no experience within investment banking, they made the environment comfortable enough to ask any question and learn from your mistakes.

What I wish was different

I wish that the other interns were more diverse. Most of them were coming from prestigious universities with a superiority complex, which made it difficult to interact with them and make genuine connections.

Advice

One piece of advice regarding going into investment banking - know what you're getting yourself into. The people that go into investment banking know that the are there to work and work hard. It's a very cut throat work environment and extremely time consuming. Just make sure its something you truly want before going into it fill-time.

What I liked

I loved meeting and working with the people I met. I learned a lot from other interns and the full time staff there. I always felt that I came back with more information than the initial question I would ask. I love that in Goldman Sachs, they value diversity of thought and experience. I felt that I was able to make valuable contribution from my background knowledge from my double major in math, finance, and actuary minor. I felt that I grew a lot professionally in a short period of time.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to collaborate with other interns. I felt there was a lot to learn from my class of interns and they were smart and lovely people.

Advice

My biggest advice is to do your research, ask a lot of questions, and learn how to take constructive feedback. It is better to be over prepared than to be underprepared. Whether you are client facing or not, when you work at Goldman, you will always be speaking to clients or other colleagues. Each person has their expertise others rely on and you never know what questions will be ask and if something you researched will be important! As for asking questions, make sure to ask thoughtful questions. Sometimes questions lead to other questions that may very end up being the solution to a current problem. On the other hand, if there is something you don't understand or want more insight on, make sure you ask for help. People are willing to help you especially your mentors and VP at Goldman Sachs. They really care about your growth and are there for every step of the way. Also, you may be saving more time asking for help than taking a huge chunk of time to solve something that may already have an existing solution for. Lastly, learn how to take constructive criticism. The team you will work with care a lot about your growth, therefore there will be many feedback on your work. This feedback is not only for your growth but also to ensure the quality of the team's group. Take the feedback and move on.

Credit Risk Analyst

June - August 2021 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

One of the things that I really liked about this job was the variety of companies that we worked with. He worked with a lot of founder own businesses so you met a lot of entrepreneurs that actually build the business from the ground up.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish I would’ve been different was more real world experience. We had two major intern projects we worked on throughout the summer and we were staffed on a few live deals but I wish we would’ve been put on more live deals from the start to experience what the analysts and associates were actually doing.

Advice

A piece of advice I would share for this experience is be prepared to work a lot. The hours were long but I got used to them pretty quickly because I really enjoyed the people I worked and I also found the work we did interesting so it made the long hours a lot better. But I would go into it expecting to work around 80 hours a week.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The people were amazing.

What I wish was different

I wish I was on a different team/project. I didn't really find my work interesting and I didn't have really any input on my project. The one good thing about my project was the complexity was pretty high for an intern.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask many questions. At first I would get stuck on something way to long before asking for help.
