Goldman Sachs

Summer Analyst

May - July 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I liked the open structure of the company, everyone felt like teammates and colleagues. I felt welcomed and empowered

What I wish was different

I wish I began with more confidence, I felt that going into Finance as an engineering major would hinder me but in reality it didn't. It only made me unique

Advice

It's fine if you're nervous and anxious but it's important you channel those feelings into working so hard that you gain confidence in your ability

Analyst (Investment Banking)

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the intellectual people that have unparalleled drive and passion for their jobs. The company also advises some of the largest Fortune 500 companies in the world and to be able to be apart of the analysis behind the decisions they make was fascinating.

What I wish was different

The hours are extremely long. You might think you can handle 80 hour work weeks but at Goldman you might have to work more around 100 hours a week. And that could be for months depending on all the deals they have going on. The environment can get intense as you often run late into the night and the deliverables are usually on quick timelines. I would have hopped that as an intern they would have supported the fact that I was still in the process of learning their procedures and processes.

Advice

A lot of people aspire to do investment banking. I would tell everyone that considers pursuing a career in IB to take some serious introspection to determine if you really can handle the extremely long hours and the high pressure environment. It’s understandable that most people believe they could but it’s a completely different once you’ve actually stepped into the role and done nothing but your job for 3 months straight.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

What I liked

I learned a ton about the industry and made a lot of connections. I also feel better versed in finance and data systems.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more interaction with other interns or with clients. The work felt a little isolating at times.

Advice

It’s as much a 10-week interview of your as it your chance to interview them! I had a great experience and realized overall it wasn’t the best fit for me at the moment, but I am so glad to have had the opportunity.

Security Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved working directly with a firm that is a leader in the financial industry. Everyone that I worked with was at the top of their field, incredibly helpful in helping me learn the ins and outs of what they do on a daily basis and I was able to help with work that could be influential to the markets. I also loved the connections with both full time employees and interns that I was able to make over the summer. It was a great collaborative experience and not the cut throat experience that is expected from wall street. As a Psychology major I did not feel disadvantaged at all because they teach you everything you need to know about the job on the job and my ability to learn and apply was more important than my previosu knowledge of what a derivative is.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to do more of the day to day work. I was on a team that was directly exposed to the markets and so I was not legally allowed to do the work that my team members did. However, I was able to shadow and do projects and reports that helped facilitate their work even though I was not the one directly working on the trades.

Advice

Work hard, take notes, and ask questions. In internships, you are not expected to know everything and if you act like you do know about something then later can not back that up you will be at a disadvantage. I would also recommend taking advantage of everything that the company has to offer with events both work and non-work related because you will meet incredible people, hear incredible stories and learn how to better your experience and your career path.

Financial Analyst

September 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Being surrounded my intellectual people who are best at what they do. Able to expand my horizons and step out of my comfort zone to work longer hours that surround and depend solely on the financial markets.

What I wish was different

To be honest, nothing as of now. But as time goes on, you’ll be able to realize your priorities and learn from your past mistakes that can help shape your future path.

Advice

If you’re working at the San Francisco office, you have to be in by 6 in the morning as the markets open at 930 eastern time. So, get ready to start waking up early every single day. Also, grow your network, connect with people and get to know them outside the office as well. This increases your chances of being offered a full-time job offer.

Operations Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

The company culture, emphasis on teaching interns about the business and their specific duties, events like the pride parade and our volunteer days, and the support offered when you needed it.

What I wish was different

The amount of time given to accomplish tasks that you haven't fully learned is the same as senior team members, and lots of intern events that take time away from your daily duties

Advice

It's a sprint, not a marathon, be strong, outspoken, but humble, and ask questions often.
