Goldman Sachs

Internal Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the in-depth training that was provided at the beginning of the internship. That was crucial as I got to the floor and was given real world tasks. You truly see the how each function aligns with Goldman Sachs client services.

What I wish was different

I wished that I could have been able to develop deeper relationships with teams across the floor. Considering that interns had to go in 5 days a week and full-time employees were in office for 2-3 days a week, it would have been better to manage such relationships if it were 5 days across the floor.

Advice

Network as much as you can within the division you are in and outside areas you are interested in! I was able to connect with employees in Financial Planning & Analysis, Asset & Wealth Management and Controllers as I continuously looked to meet a new person every 2 days.

What I liked

I loved the focus on us as individuals and how much our individuality and what makes us unique adds to the culture of the company. There was a strong focus on networking within the firm and creating our personal brand. I felt supported and heard every day and my motivation went to the roof with so much support and initiatives.

What I wish was different

My experience is one of those that you can call: " A perfect experience"

Advice

Be knowledge hungry. Companies like Goldman Sachs value your interest in learning and how you deal with situations where you do not master the subject. Take your time and be patient with yourself, don't compare yourself as much and do your best. Be positive and become "the one" people go ask for help.

What I liked

I enjoyed meeting new people, learning from my mentor, and accessing the valuable resources provided by the firm.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish could have been different is location. I simply wish I could have been closer to home, as I live in Greater Boston. Other than that, I truly enjoyed my internship and the people I have met along the way.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to stay curious and continue to ask questions. This is how you learn and stay engaged!

June - August 2023 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

The culture of the division and office that I worked in was great.

What I wish was different

I wish the networking activities for all of the intern groups were all earlier in the internship so I could've met more people at the start instead of at the end of my internship.

Advice

Make sure to gain as much experience as possible during the internship and try to network as best as possible.

What I liked

I felt supported and welcomed into the firm. I was taught many things throughout my summer there and networked with many other people in areas of interest to me. Everyone is willing to help and get to know you.

What I wish was different

I wish I networked more but sometimes I did not know what to say or ask.

Advice

Do not feel like there is a place in which you do not belong in. Any doors you walk in are meant for you to be there, do not let anyone tell you that you do not belong.

Operations Summer Analyst

What I liked

The internship program is fantastic, and geared towards making sure the interns have an amazing summer. There are intern activities, like networking events, senior level panels, and outside of work social events. With more than 200 interns in SLC over the summer there are so many opportunities to meet other students and potential full time hires. GS seems to prioritize hiring smart, friendly people, and I never met someone that wasn't willing to spend some time talking with the inter. GS also has an incredible "catch up" culture that encourages you to spend time going on walks and getting to know your coworkers.

What I wish was different

Your experience is heavily dependent on the team you end up on, and you don't have any say in where you end up. Along with that, the teams often have terrible hours, and I was working 7:00am - 5:00pm by the end of the internship.

Advice

Your team is expecting you to know nothing coming in, so it's very important to ask as many questions as possible. You also want to meet as many interns, and full time employees as your schedule allows. If possible, try to live as close to downtown SLC as possible. Commuting is time consuming, and removes you from the intern social circle.

What I liked

Quality of the work environment and culture, driven by very smart and team-oriented people. Engaging and stimulating work assignments.

What I wish was different

The hours are quite long, but I don't wish they'd been different necessarily, as I enjoyed most of my time working.

Advice

It's important to consider this job/career path early, if it is of interest to you.

June - August 2022 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved being challenged everyday, this internship was an ongoing learning experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't been as nervous to ask questions in the beginning. While this is a natural response, you can miss out on so much knowledge and opportunity if you don't ask questions or make your presence known.

Advice

Advice for anyone trying to gain experience similar to this would be to network as much as possible, either with people already established within the firm, or peers around you. There is knowledge all around you, and it's a great way to gain new perspectives, helpful tips, and connections!

What I liked

I loved the company culture at Goldman Sachs. The people are very genuine and want you to succeed. They would take out time from their day to help interns with whatever they did not understand. I also liked the structure of the internship. We got to fly out to Dallas, TX for orientation which was an amazing experience. In the beginning, we did trainings and then later transitioned into doing small tasks in our teams. At the end, the interns had a group project on financial hot topics.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was a little longer than 9 weeks. I had a lot of fun and it was a great learning experience for me.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to keep going and striving towards what you want to do. This internship allowed me to explore the financial world in terms of wealth management. Although I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from this experience, I realized that this is not what I want to do in the future. I also would advise to network within the companies you work for. Networking goes a long way and you get the chance to get to know people and what they do.

Internal Audit Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The company was great in connecting interns with the rest of the company. You could talk to anyone in the company and everyone was approachable.

What I wish was different

I really enjoyed my hands-on work and connections made, but at times interns made up the majority of my floor in the office, like Fridays because of at-home working allowed, I could have saved a day of travel

Advice

Definitely connect with anyone you can. The more people you know, the better.
