Goldman Sachs

Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I enjoyed the people and the pace of work. I was able to take on 2 more projects than expected by the end of the summer because my team prioritized my development.

What I wish was different

The region around Salt Lake is naturally beautiful, but I missed being in a large metropolitan area.

Advice

Goldman is a place where there is room for every employee to grow and challenge themselves. There is always more work to go around. Be vocal about the skills you want to engage or the challenges you want to meet and you will be given opportunity to do just that.

What I liked

I loved being in New York City, working at one of the top banks in the world. It was an incredible learning experience and I grew a lot from it.

What I wish was different

Operations Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really liked the culture of the firm and am excited to go back (in a different role). I had lots of opportunities to network and find my way to a division that was more my fit. Every deliverable I had was engaging and a value add to my team, but was able to work at my own pace and take responsibility for managing my time. Overall, the firm runs a very organized and worthwhile internship program that I would definitely recommend.

What I wish was different

I personally didn't like the group that I was in for the summer, and found that often I raced through my work and had a ton of free time--even when asking for more work. I'd definitely recommend proactively taking on assignments and communicating with your manager projects that you might be interested in taking on.

Advice

Be sure to leverage the connections you make over the summer, but also to leverage your Penn network. While I was at the firm I made an extensive spreadsheet of Penn alumni to reach out to over the summer, and that became my biggest resource for networking.

Investment Banking Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to learn more about banking and have hands-on experiences working with other analysts and actual companies. The pay was good, and they gave us a company credit card that we could use for dinner every night, if we stayed late enough.

What I wish was different

The hours were horrendous. Interns worked between 80-120 hours a week, and that's common for actual analysts, as well. Even when you got home, you had a downloaded app on your phone that updated you with emails that had attached work that still needed to be finished, even if you just worked a 17 hour day. You had to be accessible and able to work 24/7.

Advice

Take accounting, finance, and especially Excel classes! You need background knowledge in all of these areas, and those who were proficient at Excel did very well and had a shorter learning curve than the rest of the group.

Human Capital Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to network with extremely intelligent, motivated, and qualified employees. I enjoyed working on projects with full-time employees that have a meaningful impact on the future of the firm. The mentoring was wonderful and I am excited to have received a full-time offer. Compensation was very competitive.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been longer.

Advice

Working at a large firm that knows what they are doing is extremely beneficial. UVU students shouldn't be scared to apply to competitive internships. I believe a key factor in obtaining the internship was my course work and my previous internship.
