Electrical Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Dulles, VA

What I liked

I liked the engaging hands on work experience. The people I worked with were also helpful and encouraging. It was also nice to go to free events and hear an astronaut give a speech for the intern speaker series.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been tasked with more open ended work that was more engineering specific instead of desk work. The hands on work I was given was great, I would have just liked more of it.

Advice

Meet as many people as you can and become friends with older people in the company because they are your connections and can steer you into the right directions to help find what you are interested in.

Software Engineering Intern

January - August 2018 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

I felt that the work I was doing was meaningful and could directly see the benefits of my work. Also, I was able to interact with upper management regularly and easily if I had any problems. The environment at Northrop is very welcoming as nobody expects you to know everything and you can ask people for help if you need it.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more senior developers on the team I worked on. For the last 6 months of the co-op I was the senior developer of the team. Also, I wish their return offer process was more flexible and the offer respond by date was longer as I had a week to respond to it.

Advice

Don't be afraid to take on more/ different responsibilities as that is how you grow both professionally and personally.

Software Engineering Intern

May - September 2018 • McLean, VA

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I was granted a lot of autonomy with my project; my manager gave me a task without many instructions and I was able to complete it to the best of my ability and with my own discretion. We worked in an agile environment, with tri-weekly scrums and meetings. The company offers a lot of resources to interns and I was actually able to fly in the company plane 2 times for other site tours!

What I wish was different

I wasn't granted much time/opportunity for socializing with other interns, so I would have been appreciative of planned socials or intern group work.

Advice

Definitely participate in at least on intern special project! These are specific projects that management sets aside solely for intern groups to work on, under the advisory of a mentor. They are extremely interesting (I worked with Virtual Reality equipment for the first time), and you often don't need any specialized experience to participate in a project.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

Great company full of friendly and patient people.

What I wish was different

Working for the government is a little it slow sometimes.

Advice

The company is expanding and needs way more people than they realize. There will be a huge demand for intern type people to do mediocre moving-related work so that current employs don't have to stop billion dollar contract production lines during the transition "supposedly summer 2019"

Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

Being a big corporation, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with and great, experience people to work with.

What I wish was different

More work to do. Lots of days were left without much tasking or direction

Advice

Try to get a position that requires a clearance. With government contracting, a clearance opens up more opportunities.

What I liked

Working on real, applicable products with a flexible work schedule. There are definitely some cool things going on at the company.

What I wish was different

The work can get a bit dry, and the building is bland and boring with no windows.

Advice

Manager involvement is a hit or miss. If you feel like you don't have enough to do or would like to work in another area, speak up.
