What I liked

I liked how I was able to touch on numerous tasks during my time there. Also, the culture was great. Everyone respected my opinions even though I had zero previous industry experience.

What I wish was different

Digital Technology/Software Intern

May - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

Interning at Northrop Grumman was an incredible experience. The company had various networking events for interns where I was able to build a strong network of interns, NGC employees, and NGC executives. The work had real value and I got to see the ripple effect my work had on my team. The emphasis was on learning and lead engineers were always willing to lend advice or answer any project questions. Lastly, the emphasis on diversity and inclusion was incredible. I always felt like my voice was heard and considered in all meetings I attended.

What I wish was different

I personally wasn't able to get any lab work which is an experience I wish I had however, the project I was on was still in the preliminary design phase.

Advice

Speak up! A lot of interns don't think they have a voice however, what we are learning in school a lot of full time engineers did not as our industry is constantly growing. The engineers always value the different perspectives current students bring to solving real world problems.

Flight Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Roy, UT

What I liked

Was given numerous meaningful tasks throughout the summer, really felt like an added asset to the team and that they valued my work effort.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more cross-team collaboration, so that I could have seen more aspects of the program. That being said, it was a confidential project so it makes sense that teams cannot communicate a lot with each other.

Advice

Network from Day 1. The aerospace industry, especially space is still really small compared to a lot of other engineering industries. I met so many people who had worked on insane previous projects, like Space Shuttle, Falcon 9 Boosters, Hubble Telescope, and lots of others. There's a ton of knowledge available, especially from the senior engineers.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

It was a very interactive internship and I was working with other employees to learn more about the world of professional engineering. By my third week I had infinite more knowledge and felt more confident about my abilities as a full time engineer and in regards to my place at Northrop and other possible companies. This experience gave me insight to the world of professional engineering and helped me understand my own abilities and faults.

What I wish was different

Other than hoping that we all could have been in person and not been experiencing a pandemic this experience was overall amazing.

Advice

I would say to go for every single experience you are offered and be ready for anything that comes your way. I feel my openness is largely why I ended up having such an incredible experience.
